Friend of mine recently picked up a 10.5” upper in 556. He discovered it’s a fire breathing dragon of a beast.

i am helping him trying to mitigate this via various flash hider combinations but was also thinking about hand load options that may offer less flash.

barrel is a 1-7 and he is open to various bullets. Is there a specific powder or group of powders that would offer less flash?

Suppressor isnt an option for him. Anyone have a clown load for hornady black. Read one article that seemed to indicate they were using varget. But considering what a slow burn varget is that seemed odd

If he's shooting ammo loaded with a ball powder, loading with extruded like 8208 or maybe even a little faster should reduce flash. I suppose a heavier bullet load would have less flash than lighter due to reduced charge. Without a suppressor or maybe one of those novski (?) pig, a barrel that short is going to be hell at night.

Yeah with no option of a suppressor your going to have your hands full.. it’s probably going to take quite a bit of trial and error and even something as simple as switching bullets or weight of bullets could force you to go back to the drawing board. I haven’t really done much testing for this because most of my rifle stuff is ran suppressed and I haven’t really had a need to try and mitigate muzzle flash.
