hello,
I am new to the long range application and looking to purchase a new scope. I have a 6.5 creedmoor custom Remington 700 build and I am wanting glass that is the best I can get for my budget. My buget is $1800, scope must be FFP, mil/mil, tracking needs to be correct and glass needs to be as good as I can get, hopefully HD glass if possible... Iam looking at the Steiner T5xi 5-25x56 and Vortex Razor Gen I 5-20x50, any other scopes and why or which of these two and why? I dont have that much experience in higher end glass, so I'm just wanting to get good glass that I can buy and learn on, but that is also reliable in tracking and good in optical clarity....thanks in advance

I will not name names but a polite request for the best price to purchase a Vortex Razor Gen II MRAD 3-18x to several of the vendors discussed on the hide will probably get you one in your price range. Doug from Camera Land just had a thread a few weeks ago where he had bought inventory from another shop and had to liquidate it--I think he listed three of them for under 1,800.

Good Luck!

You have a healthy budget.

Dont overlook the "want to sell" section on the Hide. Some manufacturer you considered outside your budget might be attainable "gently used".

My best advice is after you clearly define what will meet your needs get the scope that your gut really pines for.

Nothing worse than "I shoulda...." after laying out that much cash.

Good morning and welcome to the forum. As a supporting vendor here it would be our pleasure to assist you. Feel free to give us a call, 516-217-1000, to discuss options. As far as optical quality the Steiner will be superior to the Vortex. In a parallel to a Vortex Razor Gen II 5-25 I would suggest an Athlon Cronus BTR 4.5-29x56 which would fit your needs and cost you considerably less than the Vortex and in my opinion offer you superior product quality control.

We still have the #RZR-31803 Gen II 3-18x50 EBR-2C MOA for $1799.99

Doug is a great supplier, and I'm very glad for you that he has opened a dialog with you to help you find a scope in your price range. I have heard many shooters love the Turrets on the Steiner but have been disappointed with the finer details of how the Optics render the image. For my money I would shop around until I found a Vortex Razor Gen II MRAD 3-18x

Within your budget, I would spring for the Athlon Cronus BTR 4.5-29 first. My second choice would be the Gen1 Razor HD 5-20 with Sphur Mount from MHSA, and last for me would be the Steiner T5XI (great scope but couldn’t get past the horrible chromatic aberration). Both are awesome scopes (you get a great mount with the Razor too) I have or have had the Cronus, Razor, and T5XI. Both are excellent options for a long range rifle, both companies are a joy to work with if you happen to run into any issues that would require warranty/customer service. Great tracking and glass on both.

Depends if you want a new in the box or an excellent condition used. You can get a good used Kahles, Vortex Razor Gen II, and others for $1800.

I have a Cronus BTR and Tango 6. The Athlon glass is just ever so slightly better around the edges. I'd look for a used scope first, especially someone selling on the Post Exchange. You can find some good deals and well babied scopes. Since you don't want you like or don't like, save some cash until you do and buy used.

Also, I didn't think turret feel would be such a big deal, but I think for most guys it is. I started with a Bushnell LRHS and when I felt a Kahles at the range, I immediately switched.

Some Cabelas stores have a good line up of scopes you can play with...play around with an ATACR F1, Vortex Razor Gen II, Kahles and then play with a Burris, Bushnell, PST, etc.
