I have my dads Marlin lever gun in 45/70 in my safe.

It is currently outfitted with a very nice peep sight setup from Lyman (IIRC). The receiver is drilled/tapped for a scope rail. I am wanting to remove the peep and mount an optic on it and maybe use it for deer hunting when I hunt in the woods.

I am looking for a qaulity scope base. Can anyone recommend one?

IIRC the lever gun is a Marlin 1895SS

I put a picatinny rail on my 444P Outfitter (same receiver). IIRC, I ordered it from Brownells or Midway. At the time, EGW was the only company making the pict standard receiver mount rails (as opposed to the XS Scout rail) for them. http://egw-guns.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=254 There might be others out now.

Edit to add: I've got one of the XS units on a .30-30 and it's outstanding. I might still put one on my big bore but wasn't quite ready to give up the rear sight and go to ghost rings yet.

I put a Warne 20 moa rail on mine. It's long enough to give good mounting latitude.

I had forgotten about XS. I may look into that.

But, I didnt know Warne even made a base for these. That may be a cheaper option and the stuff I have had from Warne in the past was good stuff for the money.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I will check into them all.

Am still looking for a scope for it as well. I recently ordered a Minox 2-10x40 for a friends hunting rifle. If it turns out to be as nice as some make it sound, I may put one of those on it.

Just looking for a good compact, hunting optic.

The XS do work really well. When I had the .30-30 built this was the only rail they offered. They've got a model that goes all the way back now too. The ghost rings are quick and pretty low profile compared to some of the peeps on the market.

I can't remember who makes them but there's another GR on the market that have a peep that will screw into the rear sight. IMO, sort of the best of both in that you have the speed of a GR and the precision of a peep when you want it. I really shouldn't have clicked this thread. You guys have me thinking about modifying my Outfitter...
