Unertl is out of business ,USO is doing a "LAST" run of MST-100's as we speak . Find a second hand one NOW if you can.

The Unertl "T" series scopes never saw service on the M40, whereas USO was actually contracted to work on the original Unertls. Some MST-100's even saw service to replace some Unertls that were to far gone to fix.
So to answer your question, if you want your rifle to be as close to "actual specs" as possible, an MST-100 would be more accurate than a Unertl "T" series scope seeing as they actually saw service on these rifles.

Tried to search for the LL post and couldn't find it prior to help you out.
I believe the summary was second generation Unertls were sub par and really weren't the same. Built from leftover parts.
USO had the contract to rebuild and replace as needed.
Go with a USO if you can find one.

I don't think too many; if any USO MST 100's were on the A1's? USO MST 100's were used on A3's till the S&B! So either way is not really a "win-win"!

Turk, you've raised an interesting point. I think USO began to manufacture the MST-100 in the late 1990s, so I believe you are right. I still believe the right choice is the USO MST-100 (for the reasons Lowlight gives), but also because the USO scope is an improved version of the original Unertl.

There were MST-100's on the M40A1's, whether they were Unertl's or USO, I don't know. I know most of the rifles I ever saw were A3's, but there had to be some A1's out there that had a refurbed one.

Here is what I just got in an email;
"The purchase that the Marine Corps made during the 80's to replace lost original puchase guns were from the C671XXXX block. I had two of them in the armory at Pendleton. For an 80's clone/build, there isn't a better serial number for an authentic reproduction."

I was trying to post a link to those very pics last night but the defenselink site was locking up on me as usual.
When I picked up my MST-100 directly at USO a few weeks ago I asked John about this as I too was very surprised at seeing a USO marked scope in an current official photo and more so that it was on a A1. John mentioned that two locations had purchased new MST-100s I think not long ago, one being the Provost Marshal's Office group as pictured at Twentynine Palms.
It's also interesting to note that the serial on this scope is 3449, only a few dozen lower than on my new scope. Guess that's about as close to "actual spec" as you could get.

Does that mean that the USMC is still using the A1; judging by the finish it looks like a fresh build?

I've got S/N 3456 that just arrived with a spec M40A3 I bought on the Hide. I'm wondering whether the M40A1 and MST100 in the images are part of a USMC historical collection and not a current service weapon.

The info on these pics list it as 'special reaction team members with Provost Marshal's Office, Headquarters Battalion, Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center (MCAGCC) during a training exercise at Range 1A at MCAGCC, Twentynine Palms, Calif., Aug. 21, 2009.'

I bought a MST-100... sitting on a GAP built M40A!... Yahoo!! Hope to pick up the C671xxx receiver next week, George said he would build it to spec and swap with the current G series receiver.. the finished product will be great.
