Here is my dilemma. I've got $1600 saved up and I need two scopes for my two .308's.

    Rifle 1: Savage 10PC in a McMillan A5.

Rifle 2: Rem SPS Tac in a B&C A3 Light tac.

The Savage is mainly a paper/steel puncher and the 700 the same but I also hunt with it. I would prefer to keep it kinda light.

I was looking at getting a 4-16 or 6-24 PST (FFP) for the Savage and a 2.5-10 PST for the 700. Plus a couple odds and ends.

Now Im thinking about going another route. I could get a SWFA SS 5-20 non-illuminated for the Savage and a Weaver GST 3-10x40 for the 700. I have one of the Weavers and I do like it for the $.

My thinking was do option 2 to get the best glass I can afford now and then upgrade the 700 later. Just thought I'd bounce it off you guys and see what you think.

    Thanks.

They all sound like good choices really? I guess it comes down to personal taste? I know from my own experience I really liked my Weaver, but sold it with the rifle and I really love my PST. The strongest point here is who has the best warranty? I believe that goes to Vortex? There policy is so good your buddy can break your scope and they will replace it!
Good luck what ever you do? I think buying the scope is harder then buying the rifle?

    Re: Scope purchase conundrum...

The Vortex warranty is better but I feel SWFA's is good also.

I do agree picking the right scope is tough. Especially when you can't get behind each one side by side.

The more I think about it the SS/ Weaver combo might be a better option in the long run.

    Re: Scope purchase conundrum...

Well to help I was going between the Vortex and SWFA. After checking out the SWFA 5-20 FFP in person I was sold. I really like the reticle on each. The SWFA is such a sweet scope! For me, it was worth the extra $400 over the Vortex, and I was able to get the illuminated version.

I would like to check out a Vortex sometime and compare. Maybe i'll get one for my .223 and play around with it.

    Re: Scope purchase conundrum...

I saw your thread thats a nice setup! My only concern in the reticle size of the SS on low power. If I do use it to hunt thats a concern in low light.

What are your thoughts on 5x with no illumination?

    Re: Scope purchase conundrum...

I would keep a look out for some used ones in the optics for sale section. In the last three weeks I found two great deals on great scopes. One was a 4.5-14 x50 mark 4 which was sent in for m3 knobs $750. Second was a USO st10 with erek and moa/moa $850. Two nice optics that would retail $2500-ish and got em for your budget. You do have to wait for the perfect one though. I have been watching for about 2 months. Swfa probably has it in stock

    Re: Scope purchase conundrum...

if it was my money i would by one high end scope such as a nice used nightforce and put it on the gun you shoot the most and save some more money and buy a scope for the other

    Re: Scope purchase conundrum...

Go with your option two. It is much better to have one nice scope instead of 2 decent scopes. You can only shoot one at a time.

It's like a lot of my buddies that dont shoot much but have a lot of guns that are $200-$600 values. If they sold them all they would have 6 or 7 thousand dollars. Its better to take that total investment and buy one really nice setup that is capable of achieving all of you goals and learning how to use it. IMO

    Re: Scope purchase conundrum...

Thats the way Im leaning. I dont have that many rifles anymore because I realized I can't shoot them all, all the time. So I've been working on making the few I have left a lot nicer.

Its tough because I want one of everything. Especially hanging out in this place.

    Re: Scope purchase conundrum...

Personally, I would not put a Nikon on my LWRC PSD. Why buy one of the best carbines on the market and then put a budget scope on it? The only justification I can see in choosing that route would be using it as an interem scope while saving for a better optic

    Re: Scope purchase conundrum...

If you do want something more, buy one higher quality scope and put it in one piece rings. Then just swap it back and forth (marking placement on the rail) You can keep track of how to adjust your zero and it should be very repeatable. Example, when moving from rifle A to rifle B, I had to adjust down 4 1/2 MOA, and left 7 1/4, and the opposite when going back to rifle A. You'll be surprised how well it works. Occasionally I'd be a minute or two off or so. So you take an extra shot to confirm your zero...big deal, you saved a bunch of money!
