Perhaps I've missed a better way, but any scope to scope comparison description seems difficult to repeat and too subjective. Here are the results of some testing I did using this custom eye chart at 100 yds. See attached. If it works for eye glass selection, it should be useful here. This is based on standard point type size so you can try this yourself. Cabilri font. The best scopes looked like they could do better than the 28 point font at this distance. I'll redo the test with some smaller type options and less mirage.
Scopes
A. Leupold Competition Series 45x45mm Target Dot
B. NightForce 12-42x56mm Precision Benchrest Illum Reticle
C. Bushnell HDMR Elite Tactical 34mm 3.5-21 50mm
D. Bushnell 3.5x10x36 AS
Smallest readable point size at 100 yds
A. at 45x=28
B. at 12x=48, at 20x=36, at 30x=28, at 42x= <28
C. at 5x=230, at 10x=120, at 21x=36
D. at 5x=230, at 10x 72
Results:
1. Price matters
2. The low-cost Bushnell at 10x is very good.
3. The high cost NF is better
Note: at 100 yds 230 point type is the same height as the 9 ring dia. on a 1000 yd target. 120 point type is the size of the 10 ring. 60 pt. is the same dia as the X ring. Chart is cut and paste printed on 8 1/2 x 11 page.
