I just ordered an Athlon Ares BTR with 50 mm objective for my Rem 700 .308 varmint with heavy barrel. Had a 20 MOA base from Blackhawk and now need to figure out what rings to order. I was thinking a low, but I am unsure of which to get that will allow clearance for scope cover and eventually a sunshade. Maybe I should go with mediums since I will also be getting a stock with adjustable cheek piece.

Any thoughts?

You could probably get by with most manufactures lows (no shares spec- low med high -between ring manufactures so go by the actual inches it is) but if you have an adjustable check then I would go medium, plays it safe and I actually like having mine off the barrel a bit. You can get an oil rag between the two easily and it’s just more comfortable to me to have it all up a bit.something around an inch should be adequate.

Ordered the primary arms 30mm in medium height tacticals (1.09"). Now the wait for all this to come in so I can finally get out and get dialed in...then time to work up some loads and see what it likes best. Only have a couple shots through it to start the break in (more so of being impatient on waiting for everything I want to get...can't let a gun just sit there even if I can't aim it at anything)

Get yourself a 20 moa rail and medium rings, ring height is dependent on the rail height. If you will be using the sun shade you will want the mediums or high.

Well, everything came in, I had a 20 moa rail, medium rings and scope mounted and have about 1/2" clearance from scope to barrel. Liking the setup, now just to get the new stock and trigger. Will be out shooting next weekend (damn rain today when it is supposed to be near 60 degrees).
