I have everything ordered but the barrel for the sdmr build. I've read numerous times that the AMU no longer uses the fluted sdm barrel for this rifle but a barrel with the AMU profile. Anyone clarify exactly what contour this is? Is it like the white Oak service rifle barrel?

Re: SDMR barrels no longer fluted

thin profile AMU barrel is.850 under rail IIRC (OP responded to your PM). did away with flutes as labor intensive IIUC, and thin profile roughly same wt. as fluted. no mentioned but wonder if flutes and the possible introduction of barrel stress controversy also played role in moving away from old fluted version.

Re: SDMR barrels no longer fluted

The USAMU SDM has had a number of barrel profiles.

Prototype, original, and AMU home-station training course rifles had National Match profiles of 1.00 inch to the gas block (since these were either new or take-off barrels from the supply room).

3rd Infantry Division OIF SDM Warfighter Experiment (proof of concept) rifles had Douglas stainless barrels profiled by Gene Barnett and finished at the AMU with 12 flutes to reduce weight.

SDM Mobile Training Team rifles provided by the Civilian Marksmanship Program came completely configured direct from Armalite with 7/8" stainless 1-8 National Match barrels. While the barrel taper was narrower and without flutes the 1-inch barrels are lighter.

The USAMU continues to re-fit the 3rd ID's rifles with fluted barrels as required. The USAMU made a smaller follow-on delivery of rifles, but aside from that no new rifles have been made.

OP, sinister's info is GTG on any topic related to SDM's. info I provided was from conversation with gene c. @ AMU some time back and info may be dated, incomplete or changed.

Re: SDMR barrels no longer fluted

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll call and talk to White Oak armament tomorrow morning and see what he says regarding this. I may just end up with his SDM fluted 20" barrel w/matched bolt. I know the AMU uses the Douglas, but I've read so many good reviews of WOA barrels that I will most likely try one of his.

Re: SDMR barrels no longer fluted

I called White Oak Armament and they weren't really sure of this subject either but they did have the 20" SDM 1/8 in stock so I went with that and matched bolt along with gastube, flash hider, and front sight.

I have armalite upper/lower shipping this week also and last thing I can think of is the DD 12.0. Are these usually used with the AMU steel collar, or will the standard be sufficient as well?

Thanks,

Alan
