I have a Springfield Armory 1911-A1 45. I just bought and was test firing, most of the time the hammer follows the slide back, it does not full auto but hammer is down with a live round in chamber. After taking apart I found the sear hook on hammer cracked and missing, is it possible to regrind sear hook or just replace the hammer. The sear looks OK but I have not put under microscope yet, what hammer would be recommended if I replaced.
Thanks to all

SA will probably fix it for free, but if it were me I would RR most if not all the internals with forged components from Wilson Ed Brown or C&S

Hello,

No, don't regrind the hooks. The safety will no longer fit properly, even if the sear does.

Is this the GI model with the spur hammer, or does it have a ring/oval hammer with a beavertail safety? This will tell us better what you can fit easily, not knowing your level of experience, of course.

I build my own 1911 pistols and use Berryhill ring hammers (just because I like the look - Brown is just as serviceable) and Brown grip safeties. For the thumb safety, this particular Caspian http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/sid=62297/pid=32437/sku/Ambi_Extended_Safety__Blued gets the nod as it's retained by the hammer pin and is the closest I can find to a King's, which is perfect for a lefty like me.

I like to start out with RIA pistols, but will be going over to Springfield for the next build. Just a bit better quality frame, IMO, even if it is made in South America.

Welcome to the world of heavily marketed foreign made mass produced inferior quality firearms.

Some fail before they even leave the gun store.

Series 70 or earlier Colt is the only mass produced 1911 I'll own. Anything else is some form of a custom job made with known good quality parts.

Yea, Spfld will fix it for ya.
