My question for the many knowledgeable loaders on the forum is this...........
Rem 700SPS 26" Heavy Barrel, 308,
Load, JLK 175's...44.5gr of RE-17...Hornady Match Brass trimmed to 2.2006....Neck sized for .003 neck tension.

Using a Hornady gauge, the Ojive length is 2.340 to lands. This gives me only 50% of the neck depth for seating.

If I seat at 2.260 I can get 80% neck depth seat which is .080 off lands. I know Bergers can get me to the lands with with 90% and shoot 1/4" at 100yds and holds 1 MOA or better to 1000yds. I got a good deal on the JLK'S and would like to use them.

Would 50% neck depth seat be enough to have a complete burn at .003 neck tension? Has anyone tested short seating as opposed to normal seat of 80 to 100% of the bearing area.

Thought I'd ask before I loaded some at 50% and then have to pull them down for a screw up which I have been known to do now and then and hate to admit it.

Any and all replies will be appreciated......Even the "WTF is he talking about" or "Test them yourself and see" comments.

Re: Seating depth of JLK 175's

you have to stop sweating the little things, if you get 1/4 MOA at 100, what the hell are you worried about. go shoot the damn thing as it seems to work.
cheers.

Re: Seating depth of JLK 175's

I guess I didn't make it clear. The Bergers at 90% neck seat depth gets me .010 off lands and shoots very well.

The JLK'S won't get any where close to the lands if I seat them to 90% neck depth.

My question..........Has anyone seated any bullet at 50% neck depth and had them work well?????????????

Re: Seating depth of JLK 175's

How much bearing area is seated into the neck? I can get to the lands with Berger 175's at 90% bearing area in the neck but not JLK 175's.
