This may be a dumb question and if it needs to be moved into that forum mods please do so.

I loaded some .308 the other night and seated the bullets to deep. I dont know if I measured wrong to begin with or didnt have my die set right or what, but I ended up with some rounds that are shorter than they should have been.

My question is can I take my bullet puller (the kind that looks like a hammer) and pull the bullets out partially and re seat them to the correct depth? If not and I have to pull the bullets completely out will the bullets still be useable?

I have never used the bullet puller other than trying it out one time on a dummy round made up with an AMAX bullet and it flattened out the polymer tip of the bullet when it came out. The rounds in question are loaded with SMKs if it matters.

Thanks for the help in advance.

I haven't ever been able to use the bullet puller for gradual extraction. I too used one to pull some Amaxes and encountered the same problem with bent tips. What I did: took a Dremel felt polishing wheel of the appropriate diameter and dropped it into the resovoir end of the puller. Fits nicely and doesn't come out. No more damage to the bullet (and only captured a little bit of powder the on the first use . . . it's good to go now).

I haven't had any problems re-seating and using the pulls.

I stuff tissue down the puller. Works like a charm. No more damaged tips. Then replace it as needed

I had thought about putting some foam or tissue in the end but just didnt know what kind of mess I would end up with the powder. I will defiantly find something to try and soften the blow and give it a try.

If I do end up pulling the bullets completly do I need to do anything to the brass before reseating a bullet?

The kinetic puller is the only way to pull bullets without damaging them. You can definitely tap them out partially and re seat. Give one good whack at about half strength and measure.

Will a collet bullet puller damage the bullets? Good to know I was considering one to replace my kinetic bullet puller.

The problem with a collet puller is that no matter how gentle you are with it, you are gonna at least leave a ring around the bullet. At worst, you will crush and deform the bullet; I've done it myself. They are not very easy to use correctly, and each pull is different. I am thinking of selling mine.

I use a Lyman large kinetic puller, handling all my needs up to 338 lapua, and other than the pain in the ass of dumping powder without dropping the bullet in the powder jug, it works just great. Bullets come out virtually unscathed. But if you are worried about dinging the meplat, just do what the guys above said and pad the inside of the puller. I don't because I haven't felt the need to do so, and it may make dumping the powder more of a bitch.
