I was wondering why SH does not have a dealer/gunsmith willing to throw together a "entry level" rifle for all the new shooters we have on here? i was "throwing" something together with prices, and wouldnt it be cool to have something for everyone asking "what should my first long range rifle be" or "long range rifle on a budget" or "under $1000 rifle"
PLEASE DONT SAY, NO YOU NEED THESE PARTS or NO IT NEEDS TO BE A REMINGTON or anything like that, this has to be a "production rifle" so obviously it cannot really have any machining work.

My idea was (along with gunbroker/online prices)

1. Howa 1500 Heavy Barreled Action
Calibers available: .223, .243, .308
$411.99

2. Bell & Carlson A2 black/grey web
$207.00

3. CDI Precision Bottom Metal
$209.00

4. Alpha Industries Mag
$62.00

5. EGW 20moa Base
$60.00

That would have you at $950 OTD in parts (at non dealer price) so you would be able to offer it with a decent profit for $950-$1000. Thats meets that requirement, and gives you all the "basics' of a solid long range rig.

Leave rings/scope up to purcaser as that is a WHOLE different ball park, but maybe say for a extra $480 you can get a Falcon Menace 4-14x44 and TPS TSR rings....

just a thought.

Re: SH Beginner Rifle Build? (reccomendation)

I feel like most people here would agree that the "beginner" rifle is a 700 sps-v with a SS 10x42.

I would think no one wants to put that rifle together because the profit margin is so tiny. Like $100 tiny.

Re: SH Beginner Rifle Build? (reccomendation)

I think this came up recently and the power that is SH basically clarified that a SH rifle that's a retail package isn't what the SH rifles are about.

I do think a SH vendor that put together a solid "everything you need to get started right in practical precision shooting" package like above could make some bucks while providing a good service.

I wish I had started with a solid rifle and scope and just spent the momney I spent chasing what I thought I needed on training and ammo!

Re: SH Beginner Rifle Build? (reccomendation)

because we all have different used and ideas for our rifles.

some do/dont want detachable bottom metal

some do/dont want a 20 moa base

etc... etc.. etc...

If guys are gonna drop a grand on there first rifle I think most would rather just buy a remington 5r.

Re: SH Beginner Rifle Build? (reccomendation)

The bottom line is, it would not sale.

No one can agree on what they want to make a line of rifles. A builder could sale some, but not a lively hood worth.

So thats why.

The prices i posted i found online, so that is obviously marked up. If a Vendor/dealer were to assemble this, it would be with him obviously buying it at his wholesale price and making that same profit already built into the prices i listed.

Also, i dont think the SPS is the best beginner rifle out. actually i think its barely the top 3. Without significant work, the SPS is not as "consistant" with overall accuracy as Savage or Howa are right. This also gives the buyer a "custom" rifle, and weather you want to say it or not, people think "custom" is better. And i feel all parts are of good quality and should produce a sub 3/4moa shooter 95% of the time. You could even setup a "genereal" load and sell the ammo if you were the assembler.

wow, very close to the same.

Im not saying someone is going to make a living off of this "package" idea. Rather as a way to even get future business from people they offer a package like this in their general inventory. If they sell 15-20 a year, that is 15-20 people a year that you have earned as a customer as well, and if they had a good transaction will go back to you for further purchases

Re: SH Beginner Rifle Build? (reccomendation)

I have the SPS-V..imo its kinda crap. What I love about it is the fact that I can order an AICS and have a decent rifle that I would not be ashamed to bring to a competition.

Savage rifles are really nice, and I have 0 experience with Howa.

O and I never even thought of the vendor deals. So I guess there would be a lot more profit to be had. Maybe you have a decent idea here.

Re: SH Beginner Rifle Build? (reccomendation)

I did the same thing with a Stevens/Savage short action:
Stevens 7mm-08 from Academy $220
Sold the 7mm-08 barrel ($70)
Used .308 factory barrel 20" $70
Choate tactical stock $250
CDI bottom metal and AI magazine $280
Sharp Shooter Supply recoil lug $28
Karsten adjustable cheek piece $59
EGW 20 MOA base $39
Rifle Basix trigger $80
**
So for $956 I have a very accurate and easy handling .308 in exactly the configuration that I want and I did not have to pay a gunsmith anything.

That build sounds great, but its to "intensive" of a process for a "production" gun. You had to remove barrels, sell old ones, install cheek rest, etc etc. The "build" i posted is all ReadyToGo. Order parts, Bolt Together, Ship out.

Also, if you sold the rifle, you have the market for the sale of the rings and scope, which varies as much if not more than the rifle build itself. The snipercentral build is very close to my idea (i guess its more my idea is close to snipercentral build, lol) but i feel there is room for improvement. If you follow the link, look at how many he has assembled and ready to go? think he was building all of those for fun? i bet there is the market, and you dont ONLY have to have them available here on the hide, there is a whole wide world that would be interested.

Re: SH Beginner Rifle Build? (reccomendation)

I got No. 1 and No. 5 together for $341.00 from Legacy, California DROS, taxes etc. included. I've got a connection who helped.

Now working on funds for the B&C, the CDI, and also $60 for inletting the B&C for the CDI.

Also working on funds for a set of 35mm rings from TPS, so I can mount my USO SN3 TPal. My scope will really be more than double the price of my rifle.

Almost there...

Re: SH Beginner Rifle Build? (reccomendation)

like i said, at dealer cost whoever sets this up WILL make a profit, and be providing a rifle that will fill the "under $1k" niche that is there for a "custom" rifle
