OP likely sorted this out by now but for others reading for tips.
Whatever you do, make sure there’s no connection to the shelf and anything moving or the surface you’re working on. Even an air duct blowing on the scale has been reported to cause inaccuracies. As long as the bench isn’t anchored to the wall that the shelf is on, you should be gtg.
