Doe the pattern of shell ejection tell you anything useful about the function of an AR? I see people commenting about shells that eject at 2 o'clock, 4'oclock, etc. Does the pattern indicate anything about the gas adjustment, recoil management, powder load? Curious.....

Kind of, but not with 100% accuracy... IMHO if your cases are ejecting straight forward it is most likely over gassed and the cyclic speed is running faster then needed for a fair weather / bench rifle.

I have my bench AR's tuned to trickle the cases out at about 4:30, and frankly "rarely" even see a roll in the dirt... BUT....

If your AR is going to be used for more serious conditions, and in crap weather / filthy conditions / and you really don't care about your brass cases.... then you need / want 100% positive function even with it full of muck / dry as the Sahara... the vigorous case ejection can be your best friend...and even the cases being flung away from you is a bonus.. Lol

Soooo... Imho, yes, you can adjust use the pattern of ejection as a "tool"..... BUT, remember , as in life, ( Lol ) there is always more to the picture then just one piece of the pie.
