Re: Sheperd scopes, what's your take

I have a buddy(who is a class 2 manufacturer and has more guns than he can keep track of) who has been using a few for a long time, swears by them. That said, he is not a tactical or match shooter, just a hardcore hunter and general blaster. His scopes don't take the beating some guys put on them, nor does he dial much(its a Shepherd, he doesn't need to). Don't know how good they are, as I have never used one, but didn't think CTD would ever be selling them. That's a curiosity, for sure.

Re: Sheperd scopes, what's your take

I don't know what the current ones are like but my neighbor has had one on a .340Wby. for quite awhile. I've watched him kill eight or ten elk with it. Last season one shot at 434yds. off my front porch. It seems to work for him.

Re: Sheperd scopes, what's your take

I bought one about 15yrs ago, would never waste my time to even look at another. I had an issue with it and sent it back 2 times never did fix it. Worst service I've ever delt with, could never get ahold of anyone, sold it and never looked back? At that time they were made about 50 miles from here, I even drove up there once and no one was around, Mom and Pop home bussiness. Maybe things have changed since, but I'll never waste my time!!!

Cheaper than dirt also sells Leupold, Aimpoint, EoTech, Winchester firearms, Springfield Firearms, Federal Ammo, etc...

Your logic is not good.

Re: Sheperd scopes, what's your take

Uncle has one that he put on an AR. He thought it was the greatest thing in the world. I thought the glass was shit. Looked like he dropped it in the lake and it leaked, then dried and crustied the inner lenses. Next to the Burris's I have on hunting rigs that cost me less i would stay away from them.

Re: Sheperd scopes, what's your take

I bought a Savage .300 win mag in 1998 and put a Shepherd scope on it. I have used it that way for years and the Shepherd system does work if you spend the time and match your load to the reticle. I succesfully put 220gn SMK on target at 1000 yards with it a few times. I always thought the glass in mine was pretty good, it was better than my Super Sniper 20x, but not near as good as the US Optics. Having said that, I hear the SS 10x has the better glass and the Shepherd was only a 10x scope at max. At the time I bought it it was the only thing I could get to do the job. Times have changed and there is alot more on the market. For what they want for a Shepherd these days I would buy something else with a mil dot reticle, not because I had problems with the Shepherd, but because using the Shepherd you limit yourself to one ballistic path, to match that reticle. Get a quality mil dot at a similar price, it will make it much easier to tailor a quality load to your rifle and get record the dope for it. Corrections for weather conditions are much easier with the mil dot system amongst other things.

Re: Sheperd scopes, what's your take

Here's all you need to know about Shepherd Scopes. This is from their site. Dual Reticles, grammar errors, spelling errors, and abundant use of ALL CAPS. This is easily the least professional site I've seen for a scope manufacturer; even worse than Counter Sniper, which they mention as a product of their own? http://www.shepherdscopes.com/product.asp

"HOW DOES THIS WORK? OUR PATENTED DUAL RETICLE SYSTEM GIVES YOU SOMETHING THAT NO OTHER SCOPE CAN... A POINT OF REFERENCE INSIDE THE SCOPE ITSELF!

DOES THIS SOUND FAMILIAR TO YOU? YOU'RE OUT IN THE FIELD, YOU'RE AT THE BENCH, YOU FIRE A SHOT TO ZERO IN AND IT HITS FOUR MINUTES LOW. YOU DIAL IN FOUR MINUTES- YOU CAN HEAR AND FEEL THE CLICKS. YOU TAKE YOUR SECOND SHOT AND IT HITS WILD. HOW COME? THE ANSWER IS THAT ALTHOUGH YOU FELT AND HEARD THE CLICKS YOU COULDN'T SEE IF THEY TOOK PLACE OR NOT. WHAT REALLY HAPPENED INSIDE THE SCOPE? WITH THE SHEPHERD YOU WILL NOT ONLY HEAR AND FEEL YOUR CLICKS YOU WILL SEE THEM AS WELL. WHETHER SIGHTING IN OR ADJUSTING FOR WIND YOU WILL ALWAYS HAVE VISUAL VERIFICATION. YOU WILL ALWAYS KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON INSIDE YOUR SCOPE. SHEPHERD IS THE ONLY SCOPE IN THE WORLD THAT CAN MAKE THIS STATEMENT AND GUARANTEE ITS' TRACKING.

WHEN YOU OWN A SHEPHERD AND YOU FIRE THE SAME SHOT TO ZERO AND YOU DIAL IN THE FOUR MINUTES- YOU CAN HEAR, FEEL, AND SEE THE ADJUSTMENT. THE CROSSHAIRS, WHICH WERE JUST ABOVE THE TARGET DURING THE SHOT, ARE STILL JUST ABOVE THE TARGET. THE CIRCLE WHICH WAS ON THE TARGET DURING THE SHOT IS NOW ON THE BULLET HOLE.

IT IS JUST THAT SIMPLE AND EVEN EASIER THAN YOU MAY THINK. THE SHEPHERD SCOPE IS THE ONLY SCOPE IN THE WORLD THAT CAN GIVE YOU THIS FEATURE, AND STAND BEHIND IT!"

Don't bother. In glass you get what you pay for. Buy Nightforce.

Re: Sheperd scopes, what's your take

More genius engineering from Shepherd scopes:

"HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOUR ADJUSTMENT "TOOK"? YOU FEEL AND HEAR THE CLICKS, YOU PROBABLY EVEN BANG ON THE SIDE OF THE SCOPE TO "ASSIST" THE SPRINGS AND MECHANISMS INSIDE THE SCOPE TO WORK- BUT YOU STILL DO NOT KNOW IF YOUR ADJUSTMENT WORKED UNTIL YOU FIRE A SHOT. THE SCOPE GIVES YOU NO ANSWERS."

Last time I checked my scope adjustments worked because I didn't buy something made in China held together with hot glue. How can anyone take this company seriously?

Re: Sheperd scopes, what's your take

You're going to be 10 times ahead by going with the SWFA SS scope. Our department purchased a couple of the Shepherd scopes a few years ago to test as replacement scopes for our SWAT sniper rifles. Some bean counter in a fancy office chair thought Shepherd's advertised sighting and verification system was just the ticket to reduce liability. Needless to say, those were the only two we purchased at all. Who knows where they're at now. I know where they're not...they're not on any of our rifles. THEY ARE CRAP!!!

Re: Sheperd scopes, what's your take

I looked into these a year ago. I live 10 mile from the "business", which like someone else said is out of a house. The scope was a "range estimated" reticle, so I thought I would like it. I stopped by the house to look at the scopes, and ask some questions. Did not get to talk to the actual Owner/operator, I talked with his daughter who works for him. These are made somewhere else, and just "shipped" out of his business. Which tells me all the repair work is done elsewhere also, and probably the reason some had "service/support" issues. I decided to pass, and started looking into "tactical" style glass, where I was not limited to 600 - 700yds by my scope....Now my profeciency is another story, but I'm working on that!!!

Re: Sheperd scopes, what's your take

I have two. They are not a March nor NF, but they are very good for what they do, fit the animal and pull the trigger. Very simple and fast, I've never had a problem with mine. Do I try to get small consistent groups at long distances with a Shepherd, no. But for hunting I like them. And, a hunting partner also has one on his .300WM.

Re: Sheperd scopes, what's your take

Well if you wear corrective lenses like I do and you look thru one its one dreary and dark scope even under the bright Cabela lights. Look at a Shephard then a Zeiss Conquest with the Rapid Z 800 reticle and see what I mean.

Re: Sheperd scopes, what's your take

If you will be using it primarily for your hunting rifles I would highly suggest the Burris fullfield 2 with the ballistic plex. I have them on two of my hunting rifles a 25-06 and a 325 wsm and I love them for this purpose! They are fairly in dealing with their customer service with another product they were wonderful to deal with. One of my buddies borrowed one of my rifles and now he has two of the same scope on his guns. Check them out! JMO

Re: Sheperd scopes, what's your take

I've used them to take four animals at over 300 yards, and my friend that has two of them has taken two Antelope at 425 and 450 yards. These scopes never lose zero and have really good lowlight qualities and are really clear. also American made and warrantied for life!

Re: Sheperd scopes, what's your take

A friend used one out in Wyoming for Pdog. He liked it for the shots out to 700-800 yards. But this was off the bench to where you could adjust the second retical quick and shoot. Took 3 shots to hit his target at 750 yards. But, for a regular hunting rifle, he wants something a little quicker and easier. But all in all not a bad scope. For 800.00 scope, in my opinion there are better in that price range.
