Does anyone have experience shooting 175gr HPBT's at vehicle glass, specifically windshields? I have a core separation question (is this the right place to post this question?).

Re: Shooting glass

your gonna get a bunch of replies about asking for your credentials and other happy horse shit. it has been discussed many times here and elsehwere. if you are in the peace officer business you will be able get a test study performed by the alphabet soup agency know as the fbi if not do the following:

aquire 1 said winshield from a junk yard....check

set it up on the approximate angle it is in the auto of your choice...check

aquire some 175smk boolets....check

fire said rounds at auto glass at your desired distances....check

record results.....all done

Re: Shooting glass

I don't want to open pandoras box, but why would you be shooting through a windshied with a 175 bthp? Hostage situation? This sounds more like a question needed for the military, but they already know the answer to that question.

Re: Shooting glass

I'm with Killswitch. I could tell you, some one else can tell you. Others will tell you "you dont need to know" like there is some be secret squirl stuff in shooting through glass.

You'll learn more by trying it. Besides its fun.

Get some glass from the junk yard, set up some targets behind the glass and see what happens.

Problem is all glass is different. Get some window paine glass and play with it too.

Re: Shooting glass

Fact, the results of shooting glass removed from a vehicle, will be somewhat different than glass that's not been removed. Different year model, make, an shooter angle all comes into play. Very pricy to glean your own info but,... much truth is not in print, no matter the sign above the door, or name on the report.

Much truth in the old saying 2 is 1, while 1 is none.

There's a thread on it.

I've never shot through glass, but I agree. The only way to train for a situation is recreating the exact situation as much as possible. Every type of glass will have a different effect, including different thicknesses of the same glass and different angle's in relation to the glass.

Re: Shooting glass

Youre going to notice jacket and core seperation, depending on glass type and target depth behind the glass. With 175gr OTM, on a 80's model suburban I had about a 1" seperation between jacket and core, also I had a predictable 1MOA shift down ward. Because of the angle of the glass. I hope this helps, just try and find some junk cars that people will let you shoot on.

Re: Shooting glass

Lead core bullets are not ideal for glass shooting. There are, however, bullets designed for this specific purpose available. The largest concern when shooting through glass is deflection, followed by a close second which is called spalling. HPBT bullet jacket design isn't made for weight/mass retention or effective KE transfer. Can they be used for shooting through barriers? Absolutely.

The variables involved in precision shooting through barriers are extensive and very difficult to quantify. A place like this forum can only scratch the surface. As with everything, situation dictates. I would suggest that if you're an LEO involved in a precision weapon billet of some sort that you head to a formal course which offers a curriculum developed specifically for shooting through barriers and mediums.

I've got quite a bit of experience shooting though all sorts of mediums with all sorts of projectiles. I'd be happy to assist you if you're an LEO. If not, get some glass and put holes in it.
