Re: Shooting with the M84 scope
I have several hundred rounds through an M1D with the M84 scope. The post is quite thick and beyond 200 yards hitting a bullseye it like floating a BB on top of a 2x4. Also the offset that is required with the top loading M1D to allow for ejection of the enbloc allows for a true zero at one range on both the horizontal and verticle plains, versus just the vertical plain on a centrally mounted scope.
It makes it a PITA to hold off for windage as well as elevation and makes hits beyond 400 yards or so a matter of luck. There are lots of Koreans and Chinese who were killed by snipers with the M1D at farther ranges, those snipers had skill.
I am an M1 Garand collector and I love the weapon but the M1C and M1D should never have existed. We already had bolt guns in common use that were better for the job(03A4 and 03)of sniper rifles. TJR
