I am thinking of removing some length from my 300WSM. It is currently wearing a 31" rock. Anyone shooting a shorty with heavy bullets? What kind of velocities from say, a 20" shooting 210s?

    Re: short barreled short mag

    I shoot a 7wsm at 24"

running a 162 amax at 3125 with no visible pressure signs on the brass. I know of another person running a 27" barrel that is getting 3160

only losin 35 fps for 3" isn't bad. that's kinda what I'm lookin for, finding out where I would still be getting good velocity but alot shorter than what I have.

If only I could get my wife to think that 3" isn't bad

i think alot of factory short mags use 24" so 4-6" less might not be too terrible is my thought, but I was hoping someone could make me feel better about chopping 10-12" off my barrel

    Why not?

    Re: short barreled short mag

If a 308 is good to 1K at 18.5" then why would it not be good to have a 300 WSM about that? I don't think I'll take it past that in all reality.

    Re: short barreled short mag

I run a 22" barrel on my 300wsm, R19 and 208's are at 2810 without pressure, in fact I took them past 2850 without pressure, but the accuracy was at 2810.

What about the new Ruger compact magnums? I have heard that they are optimized for 20 inch barrels. Supposedly they are decent performers. I know virtually nothing about them, but it would be interesting to know if it was actually viable, or even if it does have any practical/realistic improvements and/or potential.

    Re: short barreled short mag

I'm thinking about cutting off one inch at a time and shooting a few loads over the chrony. But that means I am gonna be about an inch short of a sweet spot before I know it.

    Re: short barreled short mag

That is definitely the way to do it right. Then you are 100% sure about what it will do, and then you can post the helpful information to anybody else curious about something similar.

    Re: short barreled short mag

Remington Model 7's come with 22" barrels in the 300 WSM and the SAUM series. My 7 SAUM wears a factory 22" barrel, it's a flame thrower with H100v

Another member's 22" 300WSM shoots 150's at 3200 and 180's at 3000 with factory Winchester Supreme ammo. The ammo is listed 50 fps faster than that for a 24" barrel.

The 300 WSM is only a few more grains of capacity over a 30-06, lots of guys shoot 22-24" 30-06's with excellent results.

Wow, that's a lot higher than I would have thought. Berger lists the max for the 210's at 62.1 I think. That's what I'm running right now.
