I have a Remington 700 Varmint SF and was thinking of shortening the 26" barrel. Is it possible to shorten a fluted barrel and also thread it for a suppressor?
I know of one case where it was tried, the guy went back to the can maker with a solid strike, bitched and bitched and got can fixed, a month later went back again, finally the can maker wanted to see the barrel. To this very day the "smith" (ah, nope) still thinks he had enough shoulder. Kept us laughing for quite a while! Very same monkeys were running super hot loads down the barrel.
It can still be done but a properly machined flange must be fitted. Figure around $200 it adds about 45 minutes to the job to do it right.
