I was able to shoot my new Savage 10FCP HS 308 today. Rifle has had scope mount bedded, action has been skim bedded, bolt has been lapped. Scope is a Vortex PST FFP 6-24x50 MOA reticle.
I loaded 2 different bullets to perform ladder tests. #1 was a Berger 185 VLD Hunting bullet and #2 was with Sierra 168 SMk.
I used Alliant 2000MR beginning with 42.5gr and ending with 47gr at 0.5gr increments for the 185 VLD's.
The same load was used for the 168 SMK's except I loaded 12 rounds from 42.5gr to 48gr.
The 185 VLD showed no pressure signs at 47gr but I got a nice little group at 45.5gr to 46.5gr. I will load 10 more rounds up at 46gr, chrono and see how they group.
The 168 SMK's only began to show extractor marks at the 48gr mark. They seemed to group tightly at 45gr. Again I will load up 10 more at 45gr, chrono and see how they group.
Weather was overcast, 66F, wind 10-15mph at 45Deg from behind, elev. 5300', humid. 45%
All loaded ammo was checked for concentricity ( 0.001" to 0.003"). Lapua Brass, trimmed to min length, case mouths deburred. I did not uniform the primmer pockets or debur flash hole as it appeared this was not needed. I used CCI 200 primers.

I did load 20 rounds at 44gr to see how the rifle would group. I picked 44gr as I felt this was a safe powder level when I was loading the other ladder rounds last night.
I shot these 20 rounds before I did the ladder test. These were all shot at 100 yds.
I cleaned the barrel after each shot for the first 5 shots, then cleaned again after the next 5 shot and continued cleaning after each 5 shot group. I did not have enough loaded rounds to dirty the barrel after each cleaning so groups probably would have been tighter.
The largest 5 shot group for the 20 rounds was 0.70". The smallest 4 shot group was 0.22", I threw the 5th shot but the group was still under 0.50"
This is for a rifle with only 42 rounds shot threw it. I expect that groups will shrink as the barrel gets broken in and I get comfortable shooting this new toy.

I did order a JP muzzle brake and 100 Lapua 155gr Secenar today. These bullets look like they should shoot real good, and I am hoping the muzzle brake will permit me to see hits on target.
I have not weighed the rifle but it did not kick too bad, shoulder did not get sore and did not cause any flinching.
I'll post photos tomorrow.

Anorther day at the Range

Made it back out to my range today. Weather was cooler at about 49F and winds were variable 5-20MPH.
I did another ladder test with the Berger 185gr VLD Hunting bullets. This time I began at 46gr to 49.5gr of Alliant 2000MR, Lapua brass, CCI 200 primers.
No pressure signs were noted even at 49.5 gr.
I wanted to chronograph these but could not find the Chrony.
The 47gr to 48gr produced a group but the 49 and 49.5 weren't far away. I wish I knew what velocity I was getting from the 49.5gr round.
I did shoot a couple of groups with 168gr SMK behind 46.5gr 2000MR. These were shot at 200 yds.
See photos.
The farthest target in front of the rifle is 450yds and was the one I was shooting at during the ladder test.

Good shooting. I have been debating on a Savage 10 FCP HS or Rem 700 SPS AAC-SD in .308 and looks like I might have to go with the Savage out of the box accuracy.

I have to say I am not a fan of the looks of a Savage action, but the guns do shoot great out of the box.
I did spend time lapping the bolt lugs, polishing the firing pin, bedding the scope mount, skim bedding the action, ect. before shooting the rifle.
I also spent considerable time prepping the brass and making sure everything was concentric.
By the way this barrel has the 5R rifling.

Great looking rifle! I just ordered the same one. By chance did you take any pictures of the work you did to the stock? I don't think that I will be lapping lugs, or polishing the firing pin, but I may skim bed the action. This is my first HS stock and I'm going to see how it shoots before I alter it.

Ergonomically, I'm not a fan of the hs stock on the savage. Palm swell seems too fat. It's a solid enough stock, though, and since i already had it I made the cheek adjustable using kmw hardware, the butt adjustable using a choate 3 way, and skim bedded it. It's a lot better now but still not a fan of the palm swell...

I saw the pictures of the loggerhead install, great job! I am planning on attempting that in the future. I have heard that the palm swell is like it or love it, I guess I'll find out when mine comes in. What bedding compound did you use? I have only used M-Tex in the past and wasn't sure how well it would hold to the aluminum block.

One more question, how do you like that brake? The only rifle that I have ever owned with a brake was a 7wsm. I don't think that I'll need it on a 308, but the barrel is already threaded and I'm not getting a suppressor any time soon.

I love my JP brakes. I can watch my splash and see my trace sometimes too.
