SHOT show on orders

Are there any military members or department of army civilians going to SHOT on TDY orders? My management is saying that the Army is NOT sending anyone on TDY orders to "resorts" or places that have gambling. I think they are not being truthful and just dont want to spend the money. Any feedback is appreciated.

thanks,
Dave

Re: SHOT show on orders

I have a buddy in the Air Force that goes every year. The AF always puts him in a hotel without a casino but still send him. I will try to get ahold of him and find out if he is still going.

Re: SHOT show on orders

The fact any hotel has a casino (or slot machines, i.e. US military MWR recreation center hotels) is incidental to whether or not they have an official government rate for TDY/TAD.

Its not the govt rate. They sent me in 2011 and I stayed at the Palazzo.....get off the elevator and in the show. I think they are blowing smoke up my ass to keep from spending the money. I am trying to gather intel to ask them why they are lying. If others are going on orders, and staying in a hotel with gambling, thats what I need to know. Hell doesnt every hotel in Vegas have machines????

Thanks,
Dave

Re: SHOT show on orders

I've been to Vegas many, many times TDY and if that's where the work is, that's where you're billeting (including on the Strip). Of course you may have to go off the strip to find a place that has or will give a government rate, and then you'll need to be authorized ground transportation in-and-around (taxi or rental car, fuel, and parking).

If the local billeting rate is above government per diem you're going to have to request an exception, or find a place that has the government rate (or stay at Nellis).

The SHOT Show has an agreement with many of the hotels for the SHOT industry/convention rate.

Re: SHOT show on orders

Guessing that pictures of that GSA dorkus in a hot tub with wine glasses (and the furor over out-of-control-spending on conferences, etc.) has made it a whole lot harder for anyone in government or military service to justify travel to converences, tradeshows and conventions...

And if it was AUSA or SO/LIC or DARPATech (thus purely defense-focused), it may be easier to justify these days than SHOT which covers both civilian/sporting and military audiences. But that's a guess.

Cheers,

Sirhr

Re: SHOT show on orders

my sales are to military or retiree's. I inked some real good deals at SHOT in 2011.
And out of control, I cannot be. All they paid for was flight, hotel and a small per diem. Anything else was on me.

Most here have machines, but not all. Example - an Embassy Suites near the convention center is one without gaming. It may be tough getting a reservation if you're choices are limited. My understanding is that most of the casinos do have government rates though.

Re: SHOT show on orders

You do know its not a right to be sent....if they don't want to send you then tough shit. And if resorts are an issue than get lodging on Nellis AFB and drive in everyday.

Re: SHOT show on orders

I want to go to "SHOT", will the government send me? I'll need spending money too.

Re: SHOT show on orders

That was part of the verbal agreement when hired, based on performance. This place went from nothing to a bunch (specifics left out) under my guidance. Again, I just dont like being lied to and am just trying to find out if in fact it is policy or subjective.
And the deals I inked in 2011 made this little place alot of money, much more than it cost to go.

Re: SHOT show on orders

Bottom line is your management is misinformed.

The US Army Marksmanship Unit and several other units always send folks -- it's part of their mission (as well as for those AAFES and MWR employees whose job it is to buy stuff for their gun shops and rod and gun clubs).

You might check to see who might be going from the Fort Lewis (or other posts with divisions or brigades) Outdoor Rec, or perhaps AAFES HQ out of Richardson. Navy and Marine Exchanges and MWR also send folks.
