SHOT show question...

Soooooooo, how does a regular guy get in next year? I'm not in the firearms industry or anything like that, but it sure sounds like a good time and it would be a good excuse to take my wife somewhere where we'd both have fun. How do you get in if you are just a guy?

Thanks,
Erik

Re: SHOT show question...

I hear if you give CKA a handy in the rest stop bathroom, he'll give you a pass....

Re: SHOT show question...

I'm starting my novel with a larger than life character who makes trick shots using tactical lever action rifles. Rather than a medium or large lever loop however, my protagonist's WinchMarlin lever loop will be in the shape of brass knuckles, so he can break their faces or shoot his foes.

Look for the first Possum Conner thriller soon.

Should be out by next SHOT.

Re: SHOT show question...

Erik,
One way would be to get to know you local firearms dealer. I've been helping out my local FFL dealer at our local range. It needed a lot of work and since I'm retired I put in a couple weeks of volinteer work. Plus I help him on our monthly matches. Sometimes the dealer is too busy or doesn't want to go to the expense of traveling to SHOT, you could offer to go as his rep.

Re: SHOT show question...

My range and firearms dealer got passes for myself, my wife, and a buddy (his wife went shopping). They asked me, I didn't ask them, so not sure what the procedure is. Some passes say "Guest", they got me one that showed me as a rep for them. That was cool in that manufacturers are interested in talking to you. Bad in that they want to sell you a bunch of shit. If you get a pass like that I wouldn't abuse it by misrepresenting the place that got it for you.

I also got passes with some Ed Brown pistols so that is an option, albeit an expensive one.

While most people there looked "normal", there were quite a few that reminded me of Bobby Hill from King of the Hill -- sissy boys who couldn't fight their way out of a paper bag. They usually wore camo fatigues and looked like they would be more comfortable on the FBI's most wanted child molester list than behind any sort of firearms. If they got passes, it can't be that hard!

Re: SHOT show question...

A better question would be what do you have to offer anybody who can get you in?
Everyone at SHOT needs help. What do you have to offer???
Nothing is impossible in life, as long as you are willing to work for it.

Ok, thanks for the pep talk, Dad. Let's please try to keep this in perspective - I am asking about getting into a trade show, not looking for advice on how to make all of my life's dreams come true...

Pinzmann and Cartman- thanks for the tips. I will talk to some local folks and see if there are any opportunities in that direction.

Thanks,
Erik

I think you totally missed the point of his post. Try reading it again. Just a suggestion.

Re: SHOT show question...

Chad ill take your offer, ill also clean and prep exactly 1000 pieces of said brass of yours and use your equipment

sound like a fair trade?

Re: SHOT show question...

Several vendors complained this year that so much of the trade show aspect - talking with other vendors, retailers, military users, etc - at SHOT has now broken down into conversations with wannabees that need to clear chipmunk populations from their yard or wear military-like pouches when they shoot.

I have mixed feelings, since many of the innovations come from the private sector and small groups of friends that shoot and/or hunt regularly are truly the backbone of the industry...not to mention the same people that stood up and defeated the British or that send/support those that become warriors.

Deadly, no worries. Contact me and you're in...

Re: SHOT show question...

Hey Sean,
I think you misread MY post - maybe you should try reading IT again. I am asking if I can go to the trade show if I'm not in the industry. I already gave a good job and I'm not looking for a career or even a part-time job in the firearms industry. I also have a wife, kids, and all of the time commitments that go along with that. To tell me that nothing is impossible if I'm willing to work hard is a little patronizing and seems to make the situation a lot more important than it really is.

So, on to the question of what I'm willing to do:

I'm willing to pay my own way and spend a shit-ton of my hard-earned money every year on guns and related gear.

How's that?

If that's not enough to get me into the SHOT Show, don't worry - I can find something else to do and I'll be just fine. Just sounds like it would be fun to go.

Chad - very nice of you to offer - I will shoot you a PM.

Thanks,
Erik

I don't blame him. I got after my buddy who kept talking to busy company reps who thought they were talking to someone who could order bulk numbers of their product as a dealer. I tried to limit wasting the time of company reps like that unless I really was buying in bulk. Some, however, clearly seemed interested in talking to anyone who would buy just one. I think a little good personal judgment could go a long way here. For example, I'm willing to bet the lonely guy selling/making animal scene jigsaw puzzles would have been happy to talk to ANYONE interested in his product. Ok, now I'm just being mean.

Re: SHOT show question...

Nah, it could not be said any better than you just did...

...it's just that the proportions have become out of whack. Now, there are more Mr. Arnold G. Smallbone's of 115 Wigan Street, Smalltown, USA than there are Whack-A-Mole Gun Sales, Inc. at the show.

Re: SHOT show question...

I would love to go to SHOT. I am neither millitary nor LEO, but would love to walk around and admire all the cool new stuff and perhaps meet the people whose products I buy and support. That said, I couldn't agree more that I and those like me, have no business taking up people's valuable time and considerable expense, frankly, its rude and in poor judgement.

Re: SHOT show question...

I did notice one thing at SHOT this year. On one occasion, I saw a subject escorted from the property for pimping his products out of his backpack (as in he had not paid to be a vendor). I did not see what it was, but heard the explanation from the staff as they walked him out. I heard someone nearby say they had seen the same thing the day before.

On the subject of this thread, its not hard to find a way in. You just have to ask around if you know people that are in the industry.

It also depends on the person at the booth. A company can only sell so many brands but that is not to say that one can't go and see other products and vendors. Some vendors will talk and listen to attendees of the show even though they aren't dealers with the company. My best example of this was the sales lady at Benchmade. We made it perfectly clear to her that we were not knife dealers, just consumers of their products. Not a problem with her. She then went through pretty much the whole Benchmade product line with us, showing us what's new, telling us who the designer was and what features of each and every particular knife.

While some might look at the public getting in and talking to the some of the reps as a waste of their time. Some reps take the opportunity to make the best of it to better educate the masses.

Youre pretty fucking thick arent you.

Shibs was stating the truth about getting in, not giving you life advice. Let me spell it the fuck out for you: IF you can offer something to a vendor, they will probably get you in, assuming you have a good relationship with them. In other words, "Hey ____, I will help you set your booth up and take it down, and go grab lunch for the guys every day. Can I go with you?" THAT might get you in.

No one cares about your fucking tiny wallet-share in the industry. What you spend is SHIT compared to the guys walking around with orders for thousands of rifles, pistols, packs, etc at a time. Drop your fucking attitude and listen to people that were actually there, who are trying to help you - like Shibs was.

Better yet, stay the fuck home. There were enough assholes there already. We dont need another.

Chad, I see him with a DCR badge on next year, I will cockpunch you.

did someone say BRASS ?

Re: SHOT show question...

i would have come Frank, but getting some leave would have been next to impossible since 3/6 was pumping out to Afghan the week before that. Next year though ill be out there and im sure i can convince Brandy to come to Vegas....i can see the credit card debt from her now

Re: SHOT show question...

Actually we could have used the help, and getting "Staff" in is easy for a vendor. What is not easy is having enough people to assist in the labor, handing out flyers, manning a booth while we have to go talk to someone about a deal, and generally being a good asset.
Sorry you took it a patronizing. I will take it as a life lesson to be extremely direct.

Boy, the way some of you guys talk about SHOT Show you'd think I was trying to get into the skull & Bones club or onto the field at the Super Bowl or something... Sheesh, like I said in my 2nd post: let's try to keep this in perspective. It is a TRADE SHOW. If anyone wants to go the the Minnesota Cable Communications Association show next month in Minneapolis, just drop me a line and you can be my guest. You don't even need to do anything for me.

Funny that you use the word "cockpunch" - I'd never heard that in my life before last week when I heard the neighbor kid say it to his buddy while they were digging his car out of the snow. now twice in a week? Must be the Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon, huh?

Thanks,
Erik

Re: SHOT show question...

No, but I once toyed with the idea of a comic strip featuring a brash, rough cut aquatic named Fupp Duck...

Will a mil ID get you into SHOT? I've heard both but I couldn't find anything on their website. I'm not military exactly but by this time next year I should be contracted ROTC with a mil ID.

Re: SHOT show question...

It is exhibitor/vendor only. If you get a vendor to sign you up with his people you get a pass and get in. Typically how people ride the coattails and get in.
Not hard, just find someone who needs help at SHOT.

Re: SHOT show question...

Forty-One,
Heard about that dude, but never saw it. Some peole have too much spare time on their hands.

Re: SHOT show question...

Damn...I just got an NSSF email that said, "Next year's edition will return to the Sands Expo & Convention Center from Jan. 18th -22nd, 2011 the only venue that can accommodate the SHOT Show".

I thought the that the shitty thing, besides the sky pissing rain non-stop, was the leaky ass, poorly laid out location. BOHICA

Re: SHOT show question...

Hamilton, you're in. I ordered your credentials, now we just have to wait and see if you can clear all of the background checks and security measures. I just hope you know what you are getting yourself into, my friend - this is "The Big Dance", the place where all of your cable TV dreams can come true. You want to talk to somebody about getting your home phone service right through your cable TV line? No problem. Want to listen to some mid-level sales rep from the Lifetime Network blather on about all of the exciting new original programming they have planned for 2010? You can do that. Wanna walk around and just load up on free pens and "Post-It" notes and shit? Absolutely.

We're going to need to work up a cable TV insider alias for you, though. These are the Big Dogs and they will sniff out a poser/weasel/asshole/outsider like you so fast your head will spin. I am thinking you can be a entry-level Line Tech from the Fargo system or something like that. Are you able to grow a moustache? That would throw them off your trail and buy some time. A moustache is like the Cable TV ghillie suit.

Also, if you do anything to sully my reputation in this business I will turn you over to security and personally supervise the ass-kicking they rain down on you in the alley behind the Hyatt Regency. Don't doubt it.

Give me a call when you get a break from your grueling work schedule - we need to get our stories straight on this and we also need to talk about Perry this year - it's right around the corner.

Re: SHOT show question...

Hey I saw that you're going to be staying on base.
I'm a colossal pussy and may require a motel.
I can handle the racing cars, drunk dildos peeing in my yard, car stereos that resonates my house, and the occasional gunshot, but snoring makes me want to kill.

Re: SHOT show question...

I understand that you are a pussy, but I figure for $12 a night, how bad can it be? Also, the place from last year is booked for 2 of the 7 nights we would be there and won't give me the weekly rate since they can't accommodate my requested days. Soooo, instead of $350 for the week like last year, it's $500 for 5 days and we would still need to find someplace else for 2 nights. Now that I think of it, you are a total puss if you don't stay on base and I will lead the charge of ridiculing you if you don't. Be a man - email Larry and tell him you're in. If you can't handle the snoring just have the E.A.R.S. lady make you some molded earplugs and sleep with those. Anyways, you have to ride out with me so I don't fall asleep on the 12-hour drive so we might as well stay at the same place... Not to mention we are going to OWN the Hearst Doubles this year....
