Rifle Scopes SHTF day/night scope that doesnt need batteries?

Re: SHTF day/night scope that doesnt need batteries?

As far as I know the only choice would be a Trijicon along the lines of this. All trijicon products that I've owned or used have been built like a tank and the reticle is powered by tritium so it would glow without batteries.

Good luck,

Jason

Trijicon can have the tritium changed when it gets too dim.

Tritium has a half life of 12.5 years. Key word is half life.
Meaning its still working after that amount of time. I have tritium watches that are very old and still work. If the SHTF lasts 12.5 years I doubt I will still be alive anyway. Im sure my life and ammo will have long expired.

I have had my TA01 NSN for over 5 years now and it works great,10 years is a long time.Hate to think what batteries would have cost as this is my night hunting scope.

True but the cost will burn more than a new scope.

FYI Trijicon will only replace the tritium on certain models. Ask before you buy. I bought a Tri-Power, and found out after the fact that it's not replaceable on that model.

What he said. After 12.5 years approximately half of the tritium will have decayed into helium-3, which does not glow. However, half of the tritium will still exist and glow. So if you do the math it will take about 25 years for 75% of the tritium to decay, after 37.5 years about 87.5% will have decayed. At that point the remaining tritium might still glow bright enough to use in a dark situation.

Either way, the Trijicon scopes are about the only option that you have that I know of save for the bushnell firefly reticles that can be "charged" using a flshlight or a external light source to use.

It's all conjecture for me, as most of Trijicon's range of optics aren't allowed to be exported to me in Aus, I really wanted an acog for my hog gun, but I couldn't buy new because of ITAR, and I was seeing a few second hand on ebay that had already had the tritium run out.

Strange,I don't know when they first started selling tritium illuminated sights. Are you sure these are real Trijicon or CHICOM copies that never had tritium ?

I can remember eyeing them some 20 years ago in SN. Way over my price range then as I was in school.
