I posted this on 1911 forum also. As you can see from my involvement in another thread I am getting rid of my XDS .45 due to its unreliability. So I am looking at either a 3.3 inch Sig Ultra 1911 in . 45 as I have read nothing but stellar results and apparently Sig has solved the reliability issue with a sub 4 inch 1911. However that it is still something weighing on my mind. I am also looking at a Sig 938 9mm. My local gun store has both models that I want but can only buy one, thus these two options. The pistol would be used as a back up gun and summer carry. I already own two Springer 1911's a full length railed dust cover ( FBI contract ) and what I carry for off duty now a Champion Operator. So I am familiar with the 1911 platform. One of the qualifications that I must pass is a one handed hip shoot at a close distance so the pistol must be able to be shot with one hand and function. The rounds we use are the Speer Gold Dot 230 grain in .45 and 124 in the 9mm. Luckily one of my co-workers has a 3" Kimber hes going to let me shoot and my other has a Sig 938 and is also allowing me to shoot his so I can compare. So any of you that own 3 inch or have in depth knowledge of the 3 inch 1911's please chime in also those who own a 938. Even though I know shot placement is key, I am just used to a 45 as I carry a Glock 21 for duty and the 1911 for off duty. I have shot the smaller Glocks and I don't like them, if I had my choice I'd carry a 1911 for duty. A small bullet can get bigger when it expands but a big bullet always stays big. I think I can sacrifice stopping power for reliability I refuse to go to a .380 and am not a revolver kinda guy. Thanks to all who reply and have a great weekend.

I just bought a P938, but did some research before I did. There were some problems with units made before October 2012. You might find this interesting:

Personally it would be much simpler if all your pistols were the same caliber. I would recommend that if the Sig Ultra is sufficiently comfortable to be accurate. However, that sounds somewhat unlikely...

If you find the gun hard to control, I would buy the P938. Also note that the 938 is 1" smaller in each direction, and 30% thinner.

i had the XDs 45, but i ditched it for the same reason you did. way too easy to get it to malfunction. you can't always "hold it like a man" in a self defense situation. so i picked up the 938 instead. i like it. small, light, etc. i am keeping mine along with my XDs 9.

my wife on the other hand, didn't like the 938 because "it is too small". so we switched, again, to the XDs 9. i have tried to get the XDs 9 to fail, and have not yet. but i only have 100 rounds thru it.

check your inbox for a PM from me.

Go with the 938. You will find your more apt to take the small pistol everywhere. I love the.45acp, but I would rather have something on me than nothing, and I found myself leaving the .45 when I just had to make a quick trip to the gas station or the store. Especially in the summer.

I bought an STI escort, 3 in 1911 officers model. I love it!!!! Zero failures holds 7 +1 small and light at 24 oz. the recoil master takes out most of the recoil. My wife shoots it and wants one. I carry it everywhere. I usually wear button ups untucked and it conceals fine. I have an iwb leather holster with a clip on it. It slips on and rides fine with no belt, i have even worn it with gym shorts and a loose t shirt.

I prefer a 45 if given the option.

I shot both my friends Kimber 3'' 1911 and my other friends 938. I bought the Ultra Compact 3.3" 1911 it was only two hundred more and after buying it, I cleaned it up shot it and runs like a top. Then I came home went to clean it and found it had a cracked frame LMAO I cant F*****G win. The good news is that it shot accurately and reliably with a cracked frame then I know when it comes back from Sig it will be good to go. Thanks to all who responded. Corey4 I got your pm and pending my shoot today was going to reply.

do you have pics of the cracked frame?

was it brand new?

yes brand spanking new. I also noticed what looked like a oil mark on the frame. After looking at it more in depth there is a .07" gap ( digital mic) that just sets below the mag release where the front strap cherking is. SO far Sig Customer Service has been great.

holy shit!

did they give an indication of why?

Not yet. When I spoke to the Customer Service Rep he asked if I had pictures and to e-mail them to him along with the gun's serial number.I e-mailed him the same pics I posted and what had happened. In all seriousness about 5-10 mins later I had directions on how they wanted the gun shipped shipped and a pre-paid 2nd day air shiping label. I dont think they will say anything until they look over it and make sure I am telling them the truth. Then they have to go through thier series of checks and balances follow thier company policy ect. I enclosed a copy of the receipt that shows I bought it on the 6 th and it was shipped out to them on the 7th. I also left the price tag on the box that shows "new" gun. The gun store I bought it from lists on the box new or used. I can only guess at thist time, either it was Beer Thirty hours at Sig on a Friday or after the QC personel after seeing hundreds if not thousands of guns / parts one or two can sneek through. I am not upset about it as long as the frame is either repaired, which I doubt it can be, or replaced with another frame or a new gun of the exact same type.
