Ok, I need some advice... I've settled on 2 options for optics on my SIG556... I either want to get a Nightforce NXS 1-4x24 mildot reticle, zero stop & 1/4 MOA turrets. This option will be "adequate" at CQB and mid range both...OR I want to get a Nightforce NXS 3.5-15x50 mildot reticle, zero stop & 1/4 MOA turrets but add a trijicon red dot system at 1 o'clock further down the rifle... Creating 2 specialized systems to be more versatile... I will be doing mostly range shooting out to 300 yards, but want the ability with this setup to be used as a survival weapon (should cataclysmic events necessitate such a thing)... This will eventually be my wife's primary rifle after I finish an AR-10 build....

Re: SIG556 optics advice

The advice I would offer is what ever Nightforce you get is not to mix reticle and turret type. If you go mil dot get mil dot turrets. As for the scope I would choose the Nightforce NXS 3.5-15x50 NXS

Re: SIG556 optics advice

Keep it simple. As mentioned above go mil/mil or moa/moa. Stay low powered enough that you don't need or have a parallax adjustment. A good 1-4X will get you anywhere within the performance envelope of the 5.56. A 3-9X if you feel you need more magnification.

Re: SIG556 optics advice

Why a mildot reticle with MOA turrets? Seems like it would make more sense to go with the NP-R1 or NP-R2 if you like thinking in minutes.

Aside from that, the SIG556 begs for either a red dot or a small scope in the 1-4x range. The Nightforce will be a great choice. Make sure you figure out a way to mount it low enough to give you the proper cheek weld. AR style mounts like the LaRue LT-104 are way too high, in my opinion. I put a NF 2.5-10x24 mounted in a LT-104 on my 556 yesterday to shoot some groups and the sight plane was way too high to be comfortable.

Re: SIG556 optics advice

If you find the LT-104 too tall, your head must be flatter than Bible paper...or it's just barely possible that mine is fatter than a pumpkin (LOL). I actually have the NXS 1-4x24 mounted on a LaRue LT-135, which is ~ 1/2" taller than the LT-104. For a CQB to short range optic, I personally don't want it laying too close to the rail, I want it up where I can see/acquire it quickly. JMO. Also, having it higher minimizes interference from the scope knob when racking the [right side] charging handle on a Sig 556.

Re: SIG556 optics advice

Yeah Im looking for a scope for my 556's too. I bought a Millet DMS 1x4 a while back but Im not very happy with it but at $275 I cant be disappointed.
I want to go ahead and splurge and get either an ACOG or U.S. Optics SN-12R. Personally I am to the point where I dont see the need for a variable scope on a 223 unless it was a variable up to 6x. A fixed 4x is simpler in design and adequate for most ranges.

Does any one have any pics of a SIG 556 topped with a USO SN-12r ?
