Sight picture

Re: Sight picture

For anyone not forced to use iron sights the article from the USAMU might scare off all but aspiring HP rifle shooters. The illustrations make it appear that shooting with irons is more difficult than with an optic. The illustrations also allude to relationships between the ears of the front sight and the target. The only relationship which is reliable is the one between the tip of the front sight and the target. Nevertheless, when aligned properly, iron sights are less deceptive than an optic; and, have been proven to be as capable as an optic, except for targets which cannot be seen without some magnification. Precision with irons only requires development of picture memory. The word "only" however is bigger in this context than might be expected.

Re: Sight picture

That is an excellent point. I used iron sights almost exclusively during my time in the military, and made a couple of very long range shots 1700 yrds being the longest. ( I did that with a .50 cal machine gun on the tri pod). The only way I could make that shot was concentrating on the front sight not the ears.
