I've read alot of reviews on this site for days about how great the SIII is and the glass is as good as NF or Zeiss and the repeatablity is top notch...

I'm considering buying one; but before i do, I haven't heard anyone discuss the weather conditions they are shooting in when using the SIII (6-24x50).. IS it only nice sunny warm days, or have you tested it in 90degree temps and 13degrees and snow??? We all know its not a NF, USO or SB, but will it hold up?? I just don't want to keep sending it back regardless of how good the customer service is.

I read 100's of post on how great it is, but lets hear about this.. This is a real big deal breaker for me.. Thanks again for your help.

Re: Sightron SIII (6-24x50)

I have one, but have not tested it to real extremes. The hottest I've shot it was probably around 95 and the coldest around 40. Since Sightrons are designed as hunting scopes, I'd imagine it would hold up to weather just fine. However I can't say it will hold up the same as a NF under abuse. The tube and walls feel considerably thinner than a nightforce's and is not as solid. There is a rather large difference in weight between the two, and I imagine most of the extra mass carried by the nightforce goes into strengthening.

I guess it depends on this: do you plan on just shooting it in all weather conditions? Or do you really plan to beat it up? I think it would do just fine in the 10- 90 degree range, but have my doubts if you're going to be tossing it around and such.

Re: Sightron SIII (6-24x50)

Every SIII that I've looked through (6-24 & 8-32)had great glass (=NF) and the tracking seemed spot on.

While the SIII are very nice scopes, and I'll certain will perform well in any hunting condition, it's not a "Go to War" optic.

That said, it seems rather unrealistic if you're expecting NF/USO/SB quality & durability at less than half the cost.

If that's the durability that you require, then that's the price you pay.

Re: Sightron SIII (6-24x50)

Not a, go to war optic, is that pure speculation, or have you ran tests and seen failure?

I've ran my 8-32x56 in 0-90+, I coyote hunt with it, it gets bounced around plenty, haven't had any problems, dont anticipate having any, but I haven't dropped it off any cliffs, dont use it to shield myself from gunfire, so what do I know.

My model has capped turrets, so I cannot comment on those with exposed turrets.

Re: Sightron SIII (6-24x50)

I just got one of these a week or so ago. Nice construction but it does not seem as solid as my Nightforce. Good clicks and repeatable. Spot on with the box test to 100yd. Glass seems very good/clear and I like the reticle. Put it on a 17HMR last weekend and shot it out to 300m (17HMR pooped out about 300 LOL). Used it to watch/spots others out to 500m and liked the clarity.

What I was not pleased with is the sensitivity of the eye box at 24x - kinda sensitive for my tastes. Since it is SFP it needs to be on 24x for the turrets to match the reticle. Much more sensitive than my NF NXS at 22x.

Turned it down and shot with it at 6x and 12x and it was sharp, clear and eye box sensitivity was much, much better (as would be expected).

What I do NOT like is the focus/parallax adjustment. Way too tight - makes me want to get out a pair of Channelocks to make an adjustment. I tried working it a bit thinking it might break in/smooth out but no go. Going to have to send this one back...

Re: Sightron SIII (6-24x50)

Overflow, I had the same issue with the one I bought about 3 months ago. I sent it back and the parallax turret is much better now.

NF, USO, S&B: Military Grade designs, sold to the private sector.

Sightron: Private Sector design, sold to the private sector.

NF, USO and S&B, either has military contracts or are pursuing military contracts. That's what "Go to War" means...

Sightron is not pursuing military contracts at the moment and is soley marketing to the sporting/hunting/target markets. ie: Not Go to War. Could Sightron scopes be good enough to "Go to War", possibly but they weren't designed with that intent in mind.

Yeah I suspected it might just be an issue with this individual unit. I have used some friend's Sightrons that were very nice which is what encouraged me to try this one...

Re: Sightron SIII (6-24x50)

I use both a 8-32 and 6-24 sightron SIII for f class, they are both dead on repeatable, on overcast days the 8-32 with its big 56 front lens is a bit more bright than the smaller lens of the 6-24 but for black on white shooting at known distance they are just fine scope that don't break my bank.
hope this helps.
