I'm trashing the generic cheapo scope, rings and bases on my .300 wing mag Remington 700 5r and am looking to upgrade to a SWFA 10x. I was going to go with the Warne 20 moa base with the ultra low TPS rings as I was told that's as low as I can get with a 30mm tube and 20 moa. Then the thought crossed my mind of getting the LaRue quick detach rings, as I could move the optic from rifle to rifle and keep a record of dopes for each rifle, it would be tricky but it should work, thought I'm still not sure about this, what would think? Then I found out that the Sneekins low rings are the same .82 height as the TPS rings that I wanted at first, so I thought that maybe I'd go with the 20moa sneekins base and the sneekins low rings. Sorry if I'm writing a novel here but I'm hoping giving the more info will result in more useful feedback. Anyway, 4 big questions are:

1) Base: How much higher will he Sneekins really be than the Warne, noticeable or not? Is the Quality of the Sneekins that much better? I'm pretty sure I read that the Sneekins is Aluminum, traditionally I've used Steel rings and bases, any down sides to switching to the aluminum base? Basically, Sneekins or Warne base? Or would you suggest something else completely?

2) Rings: Are the Sneekins better than the TPS or is it all just personal preference? Would there be any downsides to the LaRue QD rings if I went that route? I'm leaning towards the Sneekins right now. Same question as the base with steel vs aluminum?

3) Bedding the base: I've heard a few different methods of bedding a base. Some methods you use compounds on either the front or the rear but not both, some methods you use compound on the entire base. Can someone point me in the right direction as to the best way to bed a base?

4) Lapping the rings: I keep hearing that lapping the rings is unnecessary with quality rings and a properly bedded base . . . is this true? I've never lapped rings before, again, can you point me in the right direction if it's necessary after all of the above?

Thanks in advance for any help, I'm looking forward to some good responses.

Re: Sneekins, Warne, LaRue or TPS? Bedding & lapping?

It's Seekins not Sneekins.

I have no experience with TPS rings. Seekins makes great rings and bases.

I don't care for QD on a precision bolt rifle.

I've never bedded a base on any rifle, factory or custom. Some people like to for insurance.

Use the Google custom search engine on the lower right hand side of the screen. It's been covered here before. The standard search engine is an exercise in futility.

Re: Sneekins, Warne, LaRue or TPS? Bedding & lapping?

I have no idea why this thing auto-corrected to Sneekins every time I typed Sneekins, stupid technology, Sneekins isn't even a word, is it?

Anyway, I've been using the sites built in search engine so that's probably why I was lacking in results in my previous searches. I'll use the shit out of that custom google search. Thanks.

In my experience, larue mounts are do not lock up as tight as bobro mounts. Plus larue mounts will mar the rail when repeatedly taking them on and off. Great for red dots, I just don't think they're worth using on a precision rug. Unless you really need to share the optic w/ other rifles.
