So i bought a 308 fnar 20" barrel. It shots moa or better if i do my part. It Came with a centerpoint 4-16 scope on it which is marginal at best so i am in the market for a scope. I am a really value conscious guy. I don't mind spending a bit of money if im going to get something good but it really chaps my a$$ when i spend money on something that sucks. Therefore here is the info i have so far, correct me if i am wrong please but please only solid info backed with personal experience or relevant factual info. Not looking for "my buddy has a burris and he says it great". Now if you buddy is a professional sniper, competition shooter, industry guy or you have spent some time on the optic, I'd be listening but otherwise please limit the he said she said to experts.

I plan to use this combo for mostly target shooting from 100-1000+ yards and occasional hunting. I like the magnification of my current scope which is 16x so id like to stay around there or higher. My budget is roughly $500 but if i could spend a bit more to get a much better product or save some dough and get an equally good product i would. I am open to used but so far all the used i have seen seem to be priced ridiculously compared to a good deal on new.

What do you reccomend

So far I hear good things about vortex and metopa as far as value and quality for money Sightron?

The burris eliminator and bushnell yardagepro intrigue me for the rangefinding tech but I worry that you loose optical and build quality for for the addition of the tech.

Of course leopold is the old standby but can you get a better product for the same money if you dont care about the name on the side of your scope. i could care less as long as it is good quality and has a good warranty.

I looked though a few ziess and nikon scopes and was impressed but i keep hearing bad reviews on the monarch, why

higher end bushnell?

Im lost what are your thoughts. thanks Colin

BC Shredder, I agree with Nathan 11b The SWFA IMO the most scope for the money you can get a fix power 10 x or 16 x side focus for 400 plus shipping or same scope rear focus for 300 plus shipping both would have mil/mil recital or MOA 3x15 is 600
Good luck

The scopes you have listed so far are all oriented towards hunting mainly. If you are looking for a more tactical type optic with a mil reticle and exposed turrets, you may want to save a little more. Cost for tactical scopes goes up due to the mechanical aspect needing to be perfect for it to track accurately; a must if you are diing from a 100y zero out to 1000+yards.
With the magnification you requested of around 16x on the high end, I'd look at:
From cheapest to most expensive:
Burris Mtac 4.5-14x42 mil/mil (SFP)
Leupold Mk AR 6-18x40 milmil (SFP)
Vortex HS-T 4-16x44 mil/mil (SFP)
SWFA SS 3-15x42 mil/mil (FFP)
Weaver Tactical 3-15x50 mil/mil (FFP)
Vortex PST 4-16x50 mil/mil (SFP or FFP)

Once you go to Front Focal Plane, you won't want to go back. I'd save for one of the bottom 3 listed.

I have owned the following scopes that you could find used in you price range. Burris XTR and Trijicon5-20x50. They were both excellent scopes in terms of glass and tracking. However, they both had a mildot style reticles and moa adjustments. They were also second focal plane scopes. Someone talked me in to buying a mil/mil ffp scope. I am now hooked. Unfortunately your choices are fairly limited in your price range. I currently have one second focal plane scope left on my rifles. It is a Vortex (midway special) 5-15x44. It has mil/mil adjustments. It is on my sons rifle and he loves it. If you are patient you will occasionally see these for sale on the hide for 400-500 dollars. If you don't mind spending the extra money then I would recommend any of the PST first focal plane scopes. The 6-24x50's are nice. They are only 50.00 more expensive than the 4-16. I do not have any experience with the new Sightron FFP scope, but new they are just under 1000.00. You might consider checking them out as well. If you are going to shoot tactical matches with your new rifle, I would definitely recommend that you get a FFP scope.
