Gunsmithing Source for 308 range rod or indicator rod

Re: Source for 308 range rod or indicator rod

If you have a Last Word, with a long indicator, use that instead of the range rods. Indicate the first spot as far in as you can reach ( about 2" is plenty ), and then a little further out, about 1", unless you cut off the stub, which you should anyway.

Repeat for muzzle end, just as accurate, probably more so, as the rod and bushing has some inaccuracy inherent in it. IE... if you want to measure something, do it directly, without adding any tolerance stack.

Go directly to JGS.
Do not pass GO.
Do not collect $200.

JGS has extra long indicator rods ground for all the standard calibers. We prodded them into going this route a few years ago.

These rods have the ground areas further apart than the old style so that you can set your double indicators further apart. When you are trying to zero a section of bore instead of one position, the accuracy (and ease and speed of indicating the bore) is proportional to the distance between the two zero points.

I have read where these type setups are not consistent or are not accurate. I don't know what those other guys are doing in their setups to screw things up, but mine are super repeatable and dead nuts on.

I have used reamers from several of the big names but continue to use JGS for 95% of my reamer and gauge calls.

Hope this helps.
