This project took off about 1 1/2 years ago and the brain child of a close friend and colleague. He was looking for a shorter, lighter alternative to his FN SPR.

In the planning stage, he wanted a short barreled suppressor platform and started with the purchase of an off-the-shelf Remington 700 SPS in .308. He was going to chop the barrel and have it threaded for the Yankee Hill Phantom adapter for his can. The barreled action was sent to Mike Ezell in Auburn, KY. While Mike had it at his shop, the tube was cut and recrowned at 16 1/2" and threaded. With the barrel chopped, it comes in at 38 1/2" OAL minus the can! Mike also replaced the existing bolt handle, timed and tigged a longer tac handle and installed the Badger Ord knob.

The next step involved replacing the factory Hogue stock. I hooked him up with a fresh factory take-off 700P HS stock I had set back. As for bottom metal, he got a hell of a deal on an HS Precision DM set-up with a 4 round and 10 round mags. I bedded the barreled action in after it came back from Mike's shop. Next, I textued the stock and added four flush cups, two left and two bottom. After the basic stock work was completed, I installed the Badger EFR as he is planning a PVS-22 purchase in the near future.

Next came the optics. He purchased a Leupold model 51850 with 3/4 mil-dot reticle and M3 turrets. I mounted the Leupy for him on an EGW 20 moa rail in a set of Burris XTR lows. Last came the Burris Fast-Fire II piggy-backed with a GG&G mount.

The project was dubbed his S.P.S.B.R. (Special Purpose Suppressed Bolt Rifle). On his initial outing for break in, with the Yankee Hill Phantom attached, it was averaging between 1/2-3/4 moa.

With some more trigger time and load development, I am sure it will do better. On to the current pic I have of it at the moment (sorry for the quality, more to come).

Re: Special Purpose 700 SPS

Thanks for the comments guys.

Will try and get some chrono results for you guys before long and get some more pics posted. Still have to get the camo on it and we'll shoot some pics of the final results.

Red Belly, the flush cups are installed on the HS same as a McMillian or any other stock. I use Grovtec cups and install with a forstner bit and Marine-Tex them in place. Only tricky part to the install is in the toe of the stock. Once installed, I build up around that one and smooth it in.

Currently working on a 700 MLR for myself with similiar stock work as the above rifle.

Will get some pics of it on here when I get her finished out.

Re: Special Purpose 700 SPS

Thanks for the info. I take it you drill out the old sling swivel studs.

Also the flush cups on the grovtec site, are they the heavy duty 1 1/4" ones that you used?
