Re: Spent pills

by "recovered" what did they hit? were they found in the dirt? smack into a sand wall? pass through some plywood?
We have a bunch of 175SMK's that look like that after hitting the sand burm past 1000m

Re: Spent pills

I always thought there would be rifling marks in the copper...? could you educate me here...? guessing they were not going too fast when they hit....sand? Interesting & thanks.

There are rifling marks on them. You have to look closely because the scratches from impacting the backstop are causing them to blend in.

Re: Spent pills

The bullets landed on dry dirt.
Estimated impact velocity of the SMK was 945 fps.
Estimated impact velocity of the Hornady was 920 fps.
The 300gn SMK I had to dig for about 6 inches, but the 250gn Hornady was just laying on top of the dirt near the target.

Re: Spent pills

If you click on the picture and make it large you can see the distinctive rifling marks on the bullet on the right. If you look at the left side you will see it run up and to the right...
This may be a stupid question but are these .308? What did you shoot them out of and what was your target at that distance, how many hits out of how many shots? This is really interesting...

The rifle was a custom .338 Edge with 30" Lilja barrel 1 : 10 twist.
The 300 grain SMK on the right was loaded with 92gn H1000 for a MV of 2815 fps.
The 250 grain Hornady BTHP Match was loaded with 99 gn of H1000 for a MV of 3100 fps.
The target was at 2285 yards and I only hit it the once with a 250 gn Hornady which was still stable and accurate at this range.
The 300 gn SMK was unstable and not accurate enough.

Very interesting exercise, I learned heaps from this and will do it again with a slightly hotter load next time. And a better spotting plan to adjust for needed corrections.

To own a rifle in a particular calibre here in Australia you need a permit to aquire from the police.
To get the permit to aquire you need a genuine reason.
The cops dont see any reason for anyone to own a .50 Cal BMG

Nitros are OK but not mil spec .50 cal

i have much more patience for "silly" not "stupid" questions than a lot of dudes here, but I did have to giggle.
Hornady 250 grain BTHP Match and 300 grain SMK says these are DEF NOT .308 and most likely in the .338
