SPR- Build help me pick caliber.

I have always wanted a custom gun. So I'm in a position to build one. I have a 308 and lots of ammo for plinking and range shooting. I know it will do everything I want to do. I want a different caliber though. I'm going to have Southern Precision Rifles build me a gun. This will be a gun I hand down to my son, So I want it done right.
The calibers I'm considering are 300WM or 6.5 creedmoor. I'M OPEN TO OTHER CALIBERS AS WELL! Not looking for anything larger than 300WM. I want a commercial bullet that I can pick up at walmart if need be, so no wild builds. I will be purchasing reloading equipment withing the next couple of months, so I will be reloading my ammo. I'm Looking into shooting 600\1000 yard competitions with this rifle, although i can shoot my 308 at that range as well. Let me know what you think.

Both great calibers, but I would be leery of getting a 6.5CM for a heirloom rifle. The 300WM has been with us since 63' and ain't going anywhere soon. Personally, I love the 30-06, especially at those ranges, and it is probably one of the most common calibers in North America.

Regardless, any rifle, from what I hear, from SPR will be a great rifle that anyone would love to have, regardless of caliber. If you do get a 6.5 speciallty cartridge, just stock up on reloading supplies and hand those down to your kid along with the rifle.

6.5 Creedmoor gets my vote. I hit a 1300 yard target in a competition last weekend 3/5 times with a 25-30mph cross wind. 12.6mils elevation and 6-7 mils of windage. It sounds like a lot until you compare it to the .308. Mine has a muscle brake on it and it has the recoil of a 223 and much cheaper to shoot/reload than the 300wm not to mention more pleasant. Load some 140 berger hybrids ontop of some H4350 and you won't have a hard time finding a load.

I'm sorry, what does this have to do with an SPR? For your needs, I would suggest going the 6.5mm route, either .260REM or 6.5 Creedmoor for the factory ammo availability.

Yup, Cred or .260. Not saying it's advisable but either one will make it to a mile. And at 1300+ either one hit with authority, and many including I find them more accurate/consistent than .308. Prob because of the nice B.C.
