Hello,

I'm putting together a SPR. Its going to be a MK12 Mod 0 style, with the PRI FF tube and ARMS rail. I really like the way the Mod 0 looks. Can't decide on a scope. I have medium height ARMS #22 rings on the way as well. My goal isn't a perfect replica, I just want the best value and performance. Heres what I've been thinking

NF 2.5-10X32
Leupy 2.5-8X36 MK4
Leupy 3.5-10X40 MK4

The NF has zero stops and either mil/mil or moa/moa but its a litte more expensive. Slightly small objective size, but smaller and lighter.

The Leupold scopes have some different options, the m1,3,or 3 adjustments. The 3.5-10 also has parallax adjustment. Are they any advantages for the 1/2 MOA or 1 MOA adjustments on this type of setup?

Also, this rifle won't be used for work. I'm just a hobby shooter that likes to have the best gear gear I can afford, or at least the best value.

Thanks,

There is no WAY that you can compare a SS with Nightforce and high end Leupolds.

OP: go NF, with Mil reticle and Mil knobs!! Or MOA reticle(R1) and MOA knobs. Plus all NF is illuminated. NF will be so much better of a choice for you!!!

NF 2.5-10X32

I used one on my work gun (MK12 MOD1). Would use the same thing if I had to do it all over again.

Re: SPR Optic choices! Need some help!!!

The SS line of scopes are pretty damn good for the money IMO. I am actually entertaining the idea of getting a 10x HD on my SPR after I move the NF over to my new .308 build.

i was not comparing them, he said he wanted the best value he could afford the ss is at least half the price of the others.

just giving him low cost alternatives,

Re: SPR Optic choices! Need some help!!!

I went 10X fixed for the Type III as I already had the ACOG as a Type II optic.

Don't even consider Leupold. After himming and hawing around on Mk 4s for about 6 months I said "F**K IT" as far as Leupy goes and came up with my ST-10FL USO variant. You can guess what the FL means.

Anyway, fixed 10X, fixed 37MM OBJ, EREK 1/10 mil, US#1 1/10 mil covered, GAP MIL Scale reticle. Price is less than a Mk 4 10X and you get matching knobs and reticle.

It turns out CSGunworks already beat me to it and offers the exact same variant so I picked up one used while 2 more were on order. Something to consider, especially if you have an EREK on your precision rifle.

Re: SPR Optic choices! Need some help!!!

I ended up ordering a 1.8-10 SN-3 for mine. It has the best magnification range, is FFP, is available in mil/mil or moa/moa, fixed or adj parallax (turret or objective adjustment), 37 or 44mm obj and a wide option of knobs and reticles.

I would compare one the two new SS scopes with any Leupold or NF in their class and bet they would hold up just fine. Reviews coming in from people are definitely proving that. Might not have the reticle choices, but they are darn good scopes non the less.

Obviously someone speaking that has not compared the 3-9x42 FFP Mil/Mil to a NF or Leupold.

Listen to those that have actual experience.

Re: SPR Optic choices! Need some help!!!

Nikon Monarch Tactical 2.5x10 44mm Obj, SFP Mil-Dot Illuminated reticule. Seems like Natchez had them on sale for $400 to $500....

Not as good as a NF in terms of glass, but in my opinion better glass than Leupold. Good turrets for adjustment, repeatable, and reliable.

I have one on my SPR set up, and I really like it.

Re: SPR Optic choices! Need some help!!!

Thanks for all the help! I've got a lot to think about. I was thinking about the Nikon. I made a spreadsheet awhile back to compare a bunch of these scopes. I wanted to keep the the spirit of the Mod 0 and not go any larger than 40mm on my objective. Now I'm thinking about a Falcon 4-14 FFP, its about the same size (without the sun shade on) as the Nikon. Problem is I really want the NF.

Re: SPR Optic choices! Need some help!!!

Honestly, get what you want. You will be second guessing your purchase if you have your hart set on one thing but end up buying another. Plus, you can't really go wrong with a NF. Wish I could say the same for Leupold.....

Go with your gut feeling,I made the same mistake years ago, only I had to pay twice for what I really wanted.Smaller profile is better on that size rifle.

Re: SPR Optic choices! Need some help!!!

This is what I would run.

Now think about this for a min.

CLICK ON THE PIC

Ok, so here is a 3-9x40mm Mil-Dot with a Larue mount Illum reticle for $800 out the door.

sounds like a winner to me!!!!!!!

Next, the knobs are not "tactical" ok, who cares.

If you plan on shooting 600-800yds run a 300-400yd ZERO and hold under for short range, hold over for long range and be done with it all.

Re: SPR Optic choices! Need some help!!!

I have 2 Mk4 2.5-8x36, one with M1 and one with M2 turrets. If I had to do it over again I think I'd lean towards a USO SN3 1.8-10 or a SN4 1.5-6 but they are a nice chunk of change. The eye-relief on the Mark 4 isn't all that great, unless you mount the scope all the way back on the rail you might find yourself scooching up on the receiver extension to get a good sight picture at 8x.

Re: SPR Optic choices! Need some help!!!

Here we go again. There must have been one million threads on this very topic. Bad thing is one was mine, I'm building an SPR too and I have decided but havn't saved quite enough $$. IMO it all comes down to weight. If weight is an issue the NF 2.5-10X32 beats em all at 19oz. Quality NF beats em all. The USO, S&B are great but weigh a ton as do the higher power NF's. You get to the M3 the price gets close enough to NF. If you got $1,470 get the NF. If you don't well, continue the argumaent and "settle" for something in your budget. As long as you're happy our opinions are mute. But we love to give em! Good luck with your search and post pics when done.
