the buffalo gets away in the end and the bear never touched him, the flesh hanging off of him is because he got caught in one of yellowstones famous HOT mud pits and got burned.
The next day the rangers tracked him and put him down.

That's a really big bear. Even that far away in the background, it's almost a big as the buffalo.
