Now I know this isnt a typical rifle for this forum but I was hoping you fellas may have some leads. I have a Springfield 1898 in 30/40 krag that I got when my grandfather passed recently. I cleaned it up and actually the bore is not in that bad of shape. Unfortunately like most of them from this era it has been modified. barrel and stock cut down as a hunter. Im looking for an original front sight and some info to repair the magazine box. when cycling the bolt it will not feed the next round. outside of being cut down the stock is in real nice shape and you can still read the original cartouche. any help and info with this rifle would be great. not sure if it is from the cut down job or the bad front site weld but it seems to have been sighted for 400 yds. that seems realy long for a weapon of that time frame with that round.
thanks

Re: Springfield 1898

It's too bad that it's been cut down, especially if the original metal markings are all there. Does the bolt number match the rifle?

If all the metal parts match it might very well be a good idea to source another barrel from a Krag and get a stock and return it to military condition.

Barring that, the first place I'd look for a front sight is www.e-gunparts.com

They might have a stock and barrel as well.

Re: Springfield 1898

its a real shame because the cartouche on the stock is in great shape. i didnt think i should swap stocks because i thought that is where alot of the value is even if it had been cut

Re: Springfield 1898

Bolts (and other parts) on American service rifles are not serial numbered; the one exception would be on National Match 1903 Springfields, where the SN was etched on the bottom of the bolt. You'll probably have a lot of trouble finding an original front sight for your Krag, as they were generally removed and discarded.
