Neat way to put on a finish/pattern. I'd forgotten about said method.
I'm guessing you're applying a clearcoat to the stock now. If it helps, there are clear glass beads which are used with epoxy resin to create an invisible non-skid finish. Might be of use if you want to apply some texturizing without having it block out the color scheme.
In the past, I've typically seen them used on yachts to add some traction to the floorboards. They give a good grip, & are @ worst translucent, but usually quite difficult to discern, while allowing the wood's natural beauty shine through. Plus they're easy on bare feet while providing a good "stick". Some folks will use salt in lieu of the beads. Or sand in color X, or Y [at times in artistic patterns] if they want some contrast against the base.
I imagine that your 7yr old neighbor will really enjoy his custom smithed toy. Nice to see the hobby, & skills being passed along/given freely to another generation.
