Rifle Scopes SS 1-4x HD Questions

I have 2 questions about the new SS 1-4x scopes.

1. Are they shipping to customers yet? If not, is there an eta?
2. Does anyone have a graphic of the Donut Reticle subtentions (mil)?
3. I only have experience with 1 1-4x scope (Trijicon Accupoint 1-4x w/ Green Traingle), and I absolutely needed an extended mount for it. Will I need an extended mount for an AR, or will a straight mount or rings be okay?

1. It is my understanding that the frist shippment is in the process of clearing customs right now.
2. Sorry no graphic that I know of.
3. When I used the proto types I used GG&G and Bobro extended mounts.

I've seen that thread, and I've seen the graphics of the reticle.

I'm just wondering what the subtentions are (how wide is the donut, how thick is the donut, etc).

Re: SS 1-4x HD Questions

I'll get a drawing posted Monday.

The circle has a diameter of 27 mils on the inside and 33 on the outside,(3 mils thick).

The plus sign in the center is 20 mils in each direction.

I see you have another thread asking about Eastern Cyote hunting scopes. I can't think of a better scope for the application you discribe than the Circle reticle SS 1-4 HD scope. I got to spend about 20 hours of field time with these scopes and they keep up with an Aimpoint at close range, allow moa shooting at 500 yards, near moa at 700 yards and 80% hits on a 14" steel plate at 800 yards. If you have not seen the write up check it out here http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=2242104&page=1

Re: SS 1-4x HD Questions

I have seen your review of it, and these threads (this one and the coyote scope thread) are interrelated in my head. This thread is in an effort to see if the SS might be a good bet for me. I like the scope in theory (obviously I haven't seen one yet), and dig SS in general (I use their 3-9x for coyote hunting now)

My only problem is that it goes well over my budget. If it were $500, I would have already bought it.

I'm thinking the 1-4x PST (as it falls right in my budget and I do like that reticle as well), but I'm not sure about it since 1) it hasn't had time to be vetted by the community, and 2) the PST line doesn't exactly have a good history with having production halted while a redesign had to take place because of some design or production problems.

Have you seen a 1-4x PST? If so, what are your thoughts?

I'll almost certainly get a SS 1-4x at some point to replace my Trijicon 1-4x w/ Green Triangle (I would use it as my coyote scope, but the triangle isn't accurate enough for coyote vitals IMO).

Re: SS 1-4x HD Questions

I do own a Viper, (Not a PST), 6.5-20X42 and it is a quality scope. I would put it between the Leupold VXII and VXIII in quality at half the price. I have not yet seen the Vortex Viper PST 1-4. I have seen pictures of the reticle. That four piece broken circle may serve your needs. However, The big bold circle with the cross hair of the SS 1-4 HD is really a huge step forward in design IMO. I much prefer the iron on an AR15 over the AK47 sites because your eye automatically centers the top of the front site as you look through the aperture. With the Ak type site you are looking for equal daylight on each side of the front post while keeping the top of the front post even with the top of the rear site. To me it is no contest, one design takes advantage of how your eye naturally works and the other requires effort. The circle/crosshair reticle of the SS 1-4 HD takes advantage of how your eye works in that you bring it up on target and the target falls within your field of view. Your eye will automatically center it inside the circle and if more precision is required you have the cross hair to fine tune the shot all ready at the center of your attention. To my way of thinking it is an ingenious design that offers the speed of a red dot with the precision of a mildot in the same package.

If you are going to move up from the Trijicon 1-4 to the SS 1-4 HD eventually why not do it now. Sell the Trijicon and use the money to off set the price differential between your budget and the SS 1-4 HD? If you need to swap the scope between two rifles for awhile you'll find rezeroing a piece of cake with the mil/mil feature. While testing the two SS 1-4 HD scopes I used three different rifles and never needed more than three rounds to get a good zero.

I got hammered on another board for suggesting the SWFA 1-4 HD was a better scope than a Trijicon 1-4. I'm standing my ground on that one. The only advantage the Trijicon has over the SS HD is that it does not need a battery. The reticle design of the SWFA SS 1-4 HD is far superior to the Trijicon. The exposed turrets are far better that the Trijicon. The quality of the glass is better than the Trijicon. I owned a TR24 for years so I can make the comparison. When I get a SS 1-4 HD there will be an ACOG up for sale.

If you like the excellent SS 3-9X42, (I own two and they are not for sale), you will love the SS 1-4 HD. As good as the 3-9 is the HD series is better. It is a "high end" scope that owes no apologies for quality.

If you want one order now. I've been told that if a back order situation develops that active duty military people serving on the two way range are at the front of the line. That tells me enough about SWFA to want to support them.

Good luck what ever you do.
