It seems to me that my first custom rifle is going to be a major task. Do I just plan on making errors on parts selected and then do better the next time around? I have spoke to a few gunsmith's who were very helpful, But the lead time for a rifle will drive me crazy. If any one has advice on what to do or what not to do, Feel free to post you advice.

not every gunsmith has a 6-8 month wait...

Re: Starting my first custom build

I know what you are going through. Years ago when i had my first 1 built it did drive me a little crazy with all the eye candy. I have waited well over a year for a build but thats the way it is sometimes and it is well worth it in the end. Their are several companies here that advertise that have package deals to check out that could make your decision easier. Just figure out what you are going to use it for most and that may help narrow it down some as far as weight of rifle and stock style to use. Scroll through here and check out all the pictures and call some builders up. Good luck with your project.

Re: Starting my first custom build

First, try to decide on the rifles intended use. Multi-positional target / tactical or hunting.

Second, weight considerations as to packing your gear in/out or comps that require movement from stage to stage with gear.

Third, Maximum distance you'll be shooting at. If greater than 600 yards a BC of .550+ and a velocity of 2,850+ is a good place to start as to calibers.

Stock configuration, magazine desires such as ADL, BDL or DBM, rifle color, scope, mounts and trigger are just a few more things to keep in mind. It's really a long list that shouldn’t be left to chance. The cost of having a rifle built is very expensive, research the options and buy once.

Couldn't agree more. Buy the right gun the first time around. Serve you well for years...

I have a video tutorial for those unsure about doing custom builds:

HERE

To the OP, nothing personal, your thread is the first I saw

Re: Starting my first custom build

What to do: Save money until you are ready to source all of the parts. This will give you time to truly decide what you want. A lot of people change their minds several times before they get teh final product

What not to do: Do nopt buy a piece here and there. You will change your mind several times and end up with a bunch of stuff you will not need. This will get expensive.

In other words, as William stated above think it out and then do it and be done with it. Then get ready to do another one. Nobody can have just one custom.

Re: Starting my first custom build

If you know you want a custom rifle, but arnt 100% sure what you want, I would suggest calling an experienced smith and telling him what your planning on doing with the rifle and what your experience is. He can probably give you better direct advice and help than most people can, along with hopefully less misinformation than you will find on line.

My only suggestion is PLEASE don't do this unless your actually planning on and have the ability to purchase a rifle. Any respectable builder will take the time to talk to you.

Re: Starting my first custom build

Its not really a major task, my last 280AI was put together pretty quickly. Got the barrel from Bruno's, Action from stiller, stock from the PX here and build was done local. The number one thing is decide what you want then find the parts you need.

You can also just call one of the builders here, tell em what you want. Give them your CC to light it on fire and 4-12 months down the road have your stick in hand.

Re: Starting my first custom build

I was going to call two more Gunsmiths today. After that I will make my decision and place my order. I have the money in hand so I am not wasting there time. I think what I want is a .260 rem in a Templar or Surgeon action. A Barrel that is 18"-20" in a Sendero contour, Don't know what twist rate. A Manners MCS TA stock. Badger M5 bottom metal, And badger of Seekins rings. Need to figure where to have flush cups installed? I have a new NF 3.5-15 with high speed turrets and zero stops to go on the rifle. So all I have left is to figure out is the paint colors. And what brake to use. Also this gun will be used For paper and hunting.
