I'm thinking of making a hunting knife that could also be used for woodwork.

I would like to know if you have some recommendations for steel that would suit a gp hunting knife.

The steel I'm considering is a Swedish steel called 12C27.

I'm also considering this blade in Aus-8.

Check this video out. I like the Scandinavian knife design.

Re: Steel for a general purpose hunting knife

Hunting knife for woodworking? Two very different things IMO and the pattern you showing isn't really suited for either.

But, I know alot of hunter use the Razel SS5 and SS7 for hunting. I get picture from Alaska of folks using them all the time. These guys are really in the back country. The task is the heavy duty camp work and busting joints for hunters. Here is a knife that is used for alot of things, including it appears from this photo sent to me from the great north, for woodworking. In this case, totem poles and other cedar work. This guy isn't a hunter, but he is a well know cedar craftsman.

In any event, here you go.

You don't have to make your own, if you don't want to.

THis knife is the SS7 and its one hell of a bargain for $100.

I guess I misspoke when I said woodwork. I meant just for carving and such.
