Currently have a Proof CF barrel on order for my rifle. It is being designed as a elk hunting/target rifle. Would the added benefit of weight reduction for hunting be better or should I go steel for recoil reduction?

CF w a Terminator or APA brake. If your dead set against a brake than go w a steel barrel for added weight.
Trying to make a hunting rifle/target rifle is tough in the bigger calibers.
lots of compromises.
you need to decide which use gets priority.
Lugging Almost 20# rifle in the woods blows more than trying to hit steel at a mile with a light heavy kicker.
Plus you can always invest in a big heavy bipod like an Elite Iron Steel bipod to add weight later when needed.
