I'm looking for a portable steel target (6") that i can walk out to shoot mainly rimfire but want something substantial enough for 223

looking for ideas for mounting such a plate up as to where its off the ground about 3 feet and i can have it pretty much mounted on a pole and just flip it over my shoulder like a shovel and walk it on out.

i have a wood target frame that i have been using but its just a pain in the ass. and i have a 2 inch rimfire spinner from walmart but its to low to the ground and i cant shoot it with a 223

thanks folks

Re: steel target help

i'm piecing together a steel range at my shooting club, and going through the similiar.

from what i've reaserched over the last few weeks, AR500 1/2" just to make sure for the plates. it'll be obviously overkill for .22 lr, but will handle big calibers.

there's a ton of good posts here at the hide, do the google search for a lot of ideas and "friends of the hide" steel target suppliers makers venders.

i just hit this apparatus yesterday, seems economical and portable:

i'm also patroling the streets every trash nite looking for old swing sets to hang steel off of. laundry clothes line "T" poles seems to be an interesting way to go for more permanant stands.

then there's:

http://nevcotargets.com/catalog.html

and don't rule out ebay:

back to the portable stands, those plain real estate for sale signs seem to work well too.

Re: steel target help

+1 for JC Steel for the plate and the mount. I've always used target mounts that required a lot of engineering and took time to put up. The T-post mount from JC Steel is a great product. It is well built and easy to use. The plate protects the mount. I used wooden stakes rather than steel posts.

Couple this with great service and you can't go wrong.

Re: steel target help

I've got some brackets from ACE and a stand from Big Dog Steel. Both use rebar for legs that you buy yourself locally. Ace's also uses the rebar as the horizontal bar. Both can be easily carried downrange to set up. Big Dogs 'spinner' target frame has a built-in spinner and uses chains to hold the lower target. Ace's frames (really just the corner brackets - everything else is rebar) don't provide any hanging mechanism. I use a couple of 18 or 24" bungee cords.

My AR500 targets get craters from .223 at 200 yards if the target is not allowed to swing when shot. The individual craters aren't real deep and don't deform the target, but over time they would. I make sure they can swing now.
