I understand that fitting a TAC338 action into the new AX Chassis is supposed to be a no-go at this point. I know of a few guys on here that have put this action into the Legacy AICS with mods to the recoil lug area. I just talked to Russ at Stiller and he knows of one guy that made an AX AICS work. Russ also mentioned that he talked with AI about offering a modified AX AICS to work with their TAC338. Since Stiller and AI work together for their 300 Win Mag project, it might make sense. Judging by how long AI took for a Savage chassis, I'm not very hopeful.
I have a 308 with the Legacy AICS. I can picture what is needed to modify the chassis to make the larger, longer TAC338 work with a long action AICS, but I haven't handled the new AX chassis to see why it's such a problem. There has to be a way. Gun guys especially don't like to be told that something can't work. Someone out there with the proper tooling must have been brave enough to whittle on an AX chassis. I would love to see some pictures if they're out there.
