Picked up a Savage MKII BV .22 for cheap shooting, now Im hooked, especially on Savages. Im ready for centerfire rifle target shooting. I have access to a 300 yard range locally so I dont see an immediate need to shoot much farther out. I think .223 should fit my bill. Im gonna start reloading for my hand guns so I plan on making my own loads for the rifle. I would like to start with a stock rifle and spend a good chunck on quality glass and go from there. Any rifle and caliber suggestions would be appreciated as I would like to do this right the first time. I dont hunt but would like a set up that would allow me to if I wanted. Varmits up to maybe Michigan white tail. Mainly a target gun off a bipod or bench.

Remington 700 SPS Tactical in 223 with the 1:9 twist barrel. Run you about $550. Should do just fine from the factory but from there you can build it up as much or as little as you like in the future.

Downside to this is you can hunt deer with a 223 in a lot of places (don't know about MI.) Otherwise it'll be loads of fun, relatively cheap to feed, and excellent practice.

The SPS Tactical has a 1-12" I belive, please correct me if I'm wrong. An LTR, however, has a 1-9" twist.

Is you want another Savage, look at the 10FP in .223 with a 1-9" twist.

Tikka T3 Lite. Very accurate about the same price as the Remy SPS. Difference is the twist rate which is 1:8". You are able to shoot the heavier bullets.

only the 308 tactical is 1:12 twist. The 223 is 1:9 twist

If it where me likes/dislikes aside i'd go with the savage model 10/12. The new accustock is supposed to be a huge upgrade from the old tupperware. The accutrigger is a real nice adjustable trigger even for a newbe.

It comes in different barrel lengths and twist rates. Easilly upgradeable as well! Aftermarket stocks and dbm's can be had with the click of a mouse.
