Just like to tell you about my own stupidity at the range. I loaded up 3 diffrent load work ups for my new 300 win mag. So I put my load work ups in with my rifle case. The boxes opened up and all the rounds got mixed up. So what are you going to do...... shoot them any way...... so I got two sub one inch 5 shot groups with mixed ammo...... not bad.......

Re: stupid day at the range

Maybe you should do what works for me when working up loads. I use a sharpie marker and just mark the bottom base of case with a dot, and correspond with load sheet. So it would something like this.

Helps identify what charge is in cartridge.

Sample:
30-06 win 165gr
with load data.

NM = No Mark 55.0gr
1 dot 55.5
2 dots 56.0
3 dots 56.5
4 dots 57.0
5 dots 57.5
etc.

Re: stupid day at the range

I bought a box of different colored sharpies; one color for each load that corresponds to the data book.

Or like 0481 says, just as easy as scribbling on the side of the case. By the time it's ejected and through the tumbler, the marker is gone.

Gotta carry the bullets separate from you rifle.

Re: stupid day at the range

I tape the boxes shut and number the trays. If I'm worried about rounds getting mixed up I put a strip of tape across like charged cases to keep them grouped together.

Re: stupid day at the range

ziplock baggies or 100 rd count ammo boxes with a simple chart of what is where in it.
100 yds is not the greatest distance to test magnums anyway, the longer the better according to your abilities and facilities.
hope this helps.

I either do this or a strip of tape with the charges written in the top of my 50 round MTM box

I was worried about this happening the other day, when I took my first handloads to the range. I wound up just saran wrapping the loading block, and not boxing them at all.
It looked like a very odd tray/plate of cookies!

Re: stupid day at the range

LOL I feel your pain... Life lesson learned, eh?

When I was load testing for my .338, I just loaded 50 rounds of 300 SMK's and US869. I thought it was kinda nifty how the Lapua brass box comes with a divider so that you can set your rounds in a nice blue case... All were unmarked, divider popped outta place... All got mixed... FML.

Good thing it was all the same stuff, just pulled the bullets and started all over again...

Re: stupid day at the range

I dont really have a problem mixing up loads.
My reloading room is 10 steps from my range. I will use the same 3-5 cases for testing/chronographing over and over until the load shoots or the primer wont seat any longer. It takes all of about 5 minutes to shoot a load and then tweak it and shoot again.

It's almost like cheating.

Re: stupid day at the range

I would use this experience as a good justfication to acquire a collet bullet puller die. Shooting those rounds serves no useful purpose. Wasted components, wasted bore life; if you want to plink, use a 22. Go home, pull the bullets, and redo the loads.

My test loads have the charge Sharpied onto each/every case sidewall; that way, I can review pressure signs after firing. If they get mixed up, they can be unmixed up without issue.
