Recently purchased a Remington 700 AAC-SD and still waiting on an AAC Cyclone.I am wanting to work up a load for hunting hogs and deer. Currently leaning towards trail boss and a 200 gr smk type bullet. Any suggestions on load and or what type bullet will open up at subsonic velocities.

Re: subsonic 308 hunting loads

Start with a .45-70 and a 400 grain cast lead bullet at 800/900 fps and you won't need expansion. 5 or 6 grains of Bullseye will get you that...and silence. Start at 7 or 8 and drop the load a half grain at a time till the bullet sticks...push it out (lead is easy) and go up a grain or two. Trailboss works in the .308 at about 12 to 14 grains. Be careful...stick a jacketed 200 grain SMK in the barrel and you may be buying yourself another...plus installation. JMHO

Re: subsonic 308 hunting loads

talked to ssk inc. before about 300whisper .
He said that the bullet will tumble after hitting and had a
big wound cavity . I think the same would be for 308 sub.

Re: subsonic 308 hunting loads

I'm waiting on my stamp for my cyclone as well. After doing alot of research on 308 subloads, I decided to do a 300 blackout for a dedicated sub rifle. This thing is currently my favorite rifle. Rem model 7 with 16 inch McGowen barrel. So far, it gobbles up everything I feed it and stacks most bullets into tiny little bugholes(best group .060). Screwing on the silencer will make it even better. I will thread my 308, but will not bother with sub loads.

Re: subsonic 308 hunting loads

I have used Hornady 170 flat points (30-30 bullet with 10.2 grains of Trailboss) in my 16" barreled 308 subsonic gun on deer, can't comment on expansion much since I was making head & neck shots to be sure of a clean kill but I will say that when they hit it sounded like smacking the deer in the head with a 2x4. I've been shooting 208 AMAX subsonic loads since then which are more accurate but haven't had a chance to try them on anything living yet. They do smack steel quite a bit harder than the 170's though...
