The glass on the 10x42HD is way way better than on the regular flavor of SS 10x42mm. Hence the cost differential.

There is a lot more than the glass. The entire scope is a complete redesign. It is not even made in the same factory. Every thing about the HD version is improved and made more heavy duty. Thus the HD name.
