I have a 20" 308 that I want to shorten down to 16" for weight and overall size. It has a full length gas tube right about 14.5". This rifle is shot 100% with a 762SD attached.

My question is will there be an issue with the gas tube being this long while shooting suppressed ?
Will bullet weight make a difference, 155,168,175 ?

    sorry for the newbie question...

    Not the wrong area...

Perhaps, and I'm just guessing here, folks may be thinking "why screw with a good 20" barrel if your going to put on a can on it anyway?"

If you do go all the way down to 16" in .308 things may change quite a bit. One thing is for sure, its going to get l-o-u-d-e-r! Perhaps twice as loud. Regardless, if you do it, you will want an adjustable gas block. That way, regardless of how much the pressures have changed, you can still reasonably dial in the rifle.

My advice? read the second sentence.

thats basically the conclusion I was hoping for.. tryin to convince me of "WHY". My only real benefit was it would be a little lighter and mostly shorter. I was hoping with the addition of the suppressor it would not change barrel harmonics that much if at all. I honestly had not thought about the sound being louder, good point.

    thanks for the advice

Hanging a 1 pound weight on the end of a barrel at any length is going to change barrel harmonics.

    sorry that came out wrong..

what I meant to say was, I was hoping with the addition of the suppressor and losing 4" it would not change barrel harmonics in a negative aspect then to having the barrel at 20" and adding a suppressor.
