Suppressors Suppressor ?

pure recoil reduction is a no. Having said that I still prefer suppressed shooting. In enclosed areas (pipe, room, car, etc.) and dusty environment it is a dream to shoot suppressed....I dont have to wait for my eyes to stop rattling or the enormous dust cloud to settle before I can see my target again.

First time shooting suppressed on a 308, coming from a pva brake, yes... I noticed more recoil. Now I don’t even notice it. Personally, I think sound effects you more then the movement itself.
^^^^^ This x3000. When I was doing research on how to improve my handgun shooting skills and overcome my issues (read: flinch), I kept finding articles that discussed the mental aspect of holding on to something that breathes fire and makes tons of noise, and the psychological effect it has on the shooter, vs the actual recoil.

in my line of work, it's the actual "bang" that gets most people. I already know the recoil is expected but the amount of noise is what they are not prepared for. recoil management vs sound management has it's pro's and con's IMO

It isn't enough to think of the recoil as more or less in my experience. There is recoil energy, and there is recoil velocity. My perception is that brakes reduce energy, and cans reduce velocity. When shooting, say, a big 338 with a can, there is still a lot of recoil energy, but the recoil impulse increases dramatically so it's a slow push instead of a sharp punch.

Regardless of which one technically reduces recoil more, I never shoot without a can. They are just way more pleasant to shoot all around for the reasons stated above.

I understand it has to do with the weight of the system... So a heavy rifle with a can I understand the can has the ability to reduce felt recoil. But with a lighter rifle I understand it does the opposite. I heard this in respect to .50's and I can say it's certainly been the case with the DTA HTI in .50 BMG... It kicks like a mule with the Elite Iron can but with their brake it's more manageable --but LOUD AS FUCK! In heavier AR's, like a Grendel with an 6.5 Ultra 9, it definitely tames the felt recoil over the brake mount alone.

That said, I still much more prefer to fire almost any rifle with a suppressor than a brake any day. Overall comfort is really why we use suppressors so whether they add or take away a little recoil is kinda non-sequitur.

Now for the BMG and some other large bore stuff, there are companies that make brakes that follow the can --in that case there's still enough gas to operate a damn brake after the gas leaves the suppressor.

First time I shot suppressed I didn't like it as the recoil impulse was different compared to a brake. Shot a full match suppressed (2018 quiet riot) and absolutely loved it. Once I get a suppressor, I'll probably shoot 100% suppressed.
