I see that surefire offers 2 brakes for .556. One is the much longer MB556AR and the toher is the MB556K. Im assuming there are different cans for each one. The K looks MUCH more compact but Im assuming there is a reason others are willing to deal with the additional lengthWhich one and why?

Re: Surefire Cans

believe it or not the longer one actually adds less length to the barrel than the compact model. The longer overlaps the barrel more and adds 3.75 inches of length. The K or compact adds 4.63 inches. The compact one is for 10.5 or 11" barrels where you can't bring the suppressor back over the barrel as far...

Re: Surefire Cans

The surefire K or 512 is great for short guns. Really wonderful actually.

Otherwise I would go with the full size. But I'd skip the .556 cans and go with the 6.8spc cans. They will also mount on the .556 mounts and meter almost the same. Obviously they could then be used on 6.8spc as well. I don't know if the .30 cal cans will work the same way, but I KNOW the 6.8spc cans will.

Also, Breaks on short barrels are a horrible idea.

Re: Surefire Cans

Gotcha.

Well then.... For a man who was limited to a single 5.56 family suppressor, it seems as though a 6.8 can could offer more flexibility to the end user, no? Assuming you could run 6.8, 5.56, 6.5G, and others of that ilk.

Precisely my point.

Now if you were trying to outfit your family, as in people and not a pile of guns, I would go with 2X cheaper .30 cal cans. 2X QD YHM .30 cal cans come to mind. Those can be had CHEAP if you shop around. The added benefit of two shooters would over rule the benefits of zero POI shift and superior mounts. Or I might have completely misunderstood you and gone off on a tangent...

Re: Surefire Cans

No, makes total sense. I've heard of people running .30 cal cans on AR's, to quieter effect (and less blowback) than a true 5.56 can. I guess the obvious downside would be that most 30 cans are bigger/heavier.

You're a thinker........

Buy a surefire and cry once. Jason </div></div>

How are you mounting it on your AR?

Does it fit on the standard .556 Surfire mounts or are your AR's threaded 5/8X24?

Re: Surefire Cans

B.J.,

The .308 surefire can will fit on both the .308, and 5.56mm brakes(the longer ones), as they fit over the barrel. The shorter adapters are for the shorty 5.56 cans. I am very happy with this set-up. A fraction louder than my buddys 5.56 shorty on the ar's. Nothing a coyote or other vermin would be able to notice. Jason

Not exactly 100% correct here. The 223 M4FA and 308 762SS muzzle brake adaptors are the same length at approximately 4-4/16".
The 223 M4FA bird cage flash suppressor/mount is 3-.75" in length. (I don't have a 308 bird cage adaptor to compare.)
The muzzle brakes are 3-5/8" from the muzzle end down to the tapered shoulder. There is a small difference in the taper and shoulder depth to the locking taper end. This keeps anyone from putting the 223 can on a 308.
The 308 can on the bird cage adaptor will not safely work. Do not make this mistake in thinking ALL M4FA suppressor mounts are the same (bird cage vs muzzle brake) and that a 308 can will mount on them all.

FWIW

Not all .30 cal cans are heavier. Longer yes but some are lighter than some manufacturers .223 cans.

What are you talking about? The K can doesn't weigh much at all. The barrel threads?

Make some damn sense when you get a chance....

We did the same thing at a local shoot, the video is on Youtube.

Nobody noticed any difference whatsoever.

The AAC can also suffered a baffle strike and was sent 20yds down range that day. I believe it was attributed to bad ammo and AAC rebuilt it for free.

Re: Surefire Cans

It could have been that the bore of the AAC can was not lined up with the bore of the barrel. That happened on a lot of SCAR cans unfortunately. I hope they figured it out.
